Description: This is a major reference book for every walker as well as for those who wish to lead groups in the UK and Ireland. It is split into three sections: getting around in the hills, the upland environment and party management, all of which contain colourful illustrations, photos and maps which bring essential techniques to life. This book has been written by Steve Long, with contributions from Plas y Brenin staff, and provides an indispensable guide to the skills required for summer hill walking. The book covers every aspect of walking in the hills: route finding, navigation, clothing and equipment, camping, access and conservation, the environment, the weather, party management, hazards and risk management, dealing with incidents and first aid. This fully updated third edition includes new information about access to the hills and advice for leaders working with people with disabilities. The navigation section has also been expanded to include major updates about digital mapping and GPS devices in this increasingly technological age. In 2014 the publisher, Mountain Training, celebrated 50 years of leading the way and currently overseas thirteen personal skills and leadership schemes in walking, climbing and mountaineering. This book is the official handbook for the Mountain Training walking schemes and is endorsed by the British Mountaineering Council, Mountaineering Council of Scotland and Mountaineering Ireland. Review: Really easy to understand and useful guide book

Review: Good to have a check list of clothing and equipment, as a book for walk leaders and those walking in more remote/difficult terrain it is a good book. The book covers clothing, equipment, walking knowledge, navigation and first aid. For me a book aimed more for walkers who do less demanding walks, along the lines of The Hill Walkers Manual is more useful.

  • Waterstones 100 Scotsman Walks

    Price: £16.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: Hillwalking is a way of life for Robin Howie, whose name is very well-known in Scottish hillwalking circles and whose knowledge of the Scottish high tops is second to none. For over ten years his popular weekly hillwalking column has appeared in The Scotsman where his pleasure of walking in the hills is apparent to the reader. Some claim to buy the paper solely to read his column while others have long-demanded that his walks be made into a book. Generous with his help and advice to other walkers, this collection of shorter, lower-level walks will appeal to families and those less sure of venturing to the high tops. Conveniently arranged within shires with a location map, each walk has a useful factfile that summarises the map, start point, distance, terrain, duration of walk, height to be climbed and the all-important nearest refreshment point. 100 Scotsman Walks is a distillation of a lifetime of highs and lows, enhanced by the artist's eye and the wordsmith's descriptive powers. It will be a delight for active or ex-walkers, for the would-be explorer or armchair enthusiast, for the whole family, young or old - a book in fact for everyone.
