Review: Oh my goodness I love this book. I nearly didn't buy it because I have to admit Ruth is an acquired taste when she's on TV with her excessive enthusiasm. But I'm so glad I did - it's very well written and so informative. She knows so much about every day Tudor life. I haven't finished it yet but fully intend to as it's quite fascinating. I love it. She is a true scholar and yet she writes very engagingly. I was inspired to google finger loop braiding and fully intend to start doing that myself. It is also fascinating and very pretty. She's an inspiration. I shall watch her on TV and forgive her all her enthusiastic exaggerations.

Review: I have not read a book by the author before however I am familiar with her as a T.V. presenter. I found her style as an author very easy and interesting to read. The format of the book takes you through waking up as a Tudor and how ones day progresses in that period. This engaged my interest and I enjoyed the detail that was presented to me as the day progressed. History very often records the life's and actions of the rich and famous but it`s the life of the ordinary person that attracts my interest. Imagine our current history being recorded as that of todays celebrities ? I will look out for more books written by Ruth.

Description: From royalty to peasantry, every age has its bad eggs, those who break all the rules and rub everyone up the wrong way. But their niggling, anti-social and irritating ways not only tell us about what upset people, but also what mattered to them, how their society functioned and what kind of world they lived in. In this brilliantly nitty-gritty exploration of real life in the Tudor and Stuart age, you will discover:- how to choose the perfect insult, whether it be draggletail, varlet, flap, saucy fellow strumpet, ninny-hammer or stinkard- why quoting Shakespeare was very poor form - why flashing the inside of your hat could repulse someone- the best way to mock accents, preachers, soldiers and pretty much everything else besides Ruth Goodman draws upon advice books and manuals, court cases and sermons, drama and imagery to outline bad behaviour from the gauche to the galling, the subtle to the outrageous. It is a celebration of drunkards, scolds, harridans and cross dressers in a time when calling a man a fool could get someone killed, and cursing wasn't just rude, it worked!'Ruth is the queen of living history - long may she reign!' The next chapter explains their structure and the different materials used. He goes on to explore the different styles of timber framed, brick and stone houses and the various details of their facades. Trevor then looks inside the houses, detailing their rooms, how they were used and the interior features. There is a chapter on Tudor gardens, outbuildings and gatehouses, and finally Trevor looks at the Tudor houses that have survived to this day.
