Description: How to Improve Doctor-Patient Connection offers actionable steps for improving communication between health professionals and patients based on visual, auditory, and emotional understanding from the principles of cognitive psychology. Drawing on the author's personal experience as both a healthcare professional and a mother of two children, How to Improve Doctor-Patient Connection explores communication between doctors and patients as well as bias in healthcare. This how-to text includes several practical applications that can be applied to healthcare encounters, enabling readers to form habits based on visual analysis of body language, auditory information from language and tone of voice, and logical emotion perception that will allow for improved doctor-patient connection. By integrating the perspectives of both doctors and patients and applying a psychological lens, this text is invaluable to healthcare practitioners, students of medicine, healthcare, biology, and related fields, and anyone looking to improve their own or other's quality of doctor-patient interactions and overall healthcare experience.

Review: Most things we as either physicians or patients complain about in regards to our current medical system here in the U.S, unfortunately cannot be easily changed. One that definitely can be improved is the doctor-patient relationship (doctor-patient connection or bed-side manner). Ko's book is based in part on her own personal experience both as a doctor and as a patient or parent of a patient. In addition it also is heavily referenced from the top publications dealing with this issue or related psychology. The book is easy to read, and is consistently highlighted by interspersed pages that give supplemental information or practical applications. What makes the book unique is, as the title states, it's use of psychology to understand the interactions between doctor and patient. As a result one not only learns how to Improve this relationship, but also now understands the basis underlying the relationship both as doctor and patient. As she sees it, Ko discusses in detail the three pillars of perception: visual, auditory, and emotional. As a doctor I considered myself one with a decent relationship with most of my patients, but never really thought about the underlying processes involved. If I have any concern about the book is that those doctors who most need to improve their patient relationship skills, are probably unlikely to read the book. Therefore, since this is such an important issue that can help to improve our delivery of medical care, I believe that all medical schools should teach the subject. It could be taught as part of a psychology-psychiatry rotation or as a separate subject. Ideally it could be reinforced at the post graduate level as well. Dr.Ko's book would be a very appropriate text for such a course. For those who think their current doctor-patient connection is adequate, there is always room for improvement. The book's cost is reasonable, and it is technically well put together from it's binding and page quality to highly readable format.
