Review: Finally a book that doesn't just state the obvious (frankly most books are a waste of time), all of the author's suggestions are backed up with examples for improvements and really does hone the writing process. So many books just tell you to 'look at your childhood for inspiration'and nothing much else - this one takes your own story and helps you format your writing correctly for the picture book market, brings to the forefront what editors are looking for and how to modify your own work to fit their requirements and backs everything up with examples. I was thrilled with this book and i have now modified three of my existing stories and have put them back out to publishers, with a renewed enthusiasm and confidence that it will be now down to my story if it gets chosen and not refused because of silly mistakes. More than worth the money.

Review: I bought the first edition of this book a few years ago and absolutely loved it! It was informative with solid advice in all aspects of writing children's picture books and I use it as my referral book when writing new material. So when I realised a new edition was in the making I was elated! As most children's writers will know, the publishing industry changes continuously with varying submission policies and criteria that it is imperative to always be ahead of your game and know the most up to date information. That's where I thought this new edition would come in amazingly handy. However, this book is exactly (word for word) the same as the first edition with the exception of page 172 where there is one single added page regarding self-published ebooks. I was so, so disappointed, having read the first edition cover to cover three times and then for referral use I was really excited to be receiving a new and updated edition as it states quite clearly that this is an 'updated version,' but I don't really think the one single extra page suffices. As with most new editions the advice and criteria should be completely 'updated and fresh' but this word for word the same and more annoyingly the advice that was given in the first edition, for example, 'the current advised word count' and 'characters publishers love' are not going to be the same five years on, and it would have been nice to have read what publishers are looking for now in 2016 not 2011. However... The first edition (and also this edition if you haven't read the first edition) are fantastically laid out informative books for anyone looking to write for children. My grading is 5/5 stars for the content of edition 1, but 3/5 for this edition as two almost identical editions isn't an updated version in my opinion. :-(
