Review: I've read some H P Lovecraft before, and, years later, I decided I "ought to" give him a proper chance. This book was pretty much as expected. Lovecraft had a fantastically dark vision of his world. However, his writing style is laboured, and sooner rather than later, you get a bit tired of everything being eldritch, nameless, blasphemous, or — for occasional variety — rugose (look it up :) ) If Lovecraft had been born a few decades later, he would have designed some excellent album sleeves for metal bands. As it was, he wrote a whole load of short fiction in which someone gradually becomes aware of something eldritch, nameless and blasphemous (and occasionally rugose) and goes mad. I'll say again, though, his vision of his cosmos is fantastic, and probably worth the entrance fee alone. It's just the writing style that wears thin. Go on, buy it, you know you want to, but only read them one at a time, with sufficient intervals in between that it seems fresh. His stories are a bit like anchovies: strongly flavoured and some people really like them, but very few people would consume a whole plateful at one sitting.
