Review: This is a brilliant visual for those learning the basics of coding. I found this book super helpful, well organised, and I found that it helps learning bc of the way it’s presented. I’m sure not everyone learns the same way I do, but for those who love visuals, I think this is an excellent book.

Review: I was really unsure how to rate this book, so I've settled on a 3. I would actually rate the content a 4 but the physical quality of the book itself lets the product down. I bought this book as an introduction to HTML5 and CSS3. I'm a graphic designer that sometimes has to do some website work and wanted to become acquainted with newer techniques as I'd previously fudged along with Dreamweaver and convoluted table-based layouts. I looked into the code a bit here and there but didn't really understand much beyond the more basic stuff and a bit of CSS for formatting text and links. I was expecting this book to be an introduction into these newer methods and that's exactly what it is. It can't cover everything but lays a great foundation to build upon, especially if you find the idea of coding rather daunting. The book is really easy to pick up and read. It's organised in easily digestible chunks which were a godsend to me as my mind has a habit of switching off when it comes to reading educational texts. It begins with the basics of HTML then introduces the CSS in the 2nd half of the book. There's plenty of examples to type up and you can download files from the accompanying website. For someone like myself this has been great starting point without going into too much depth. The downside is the actually quality of the physical book itself, most notably the cover and binding. I've not been particularly heavy handed with the book but cover is poor. It curls outwards and the laminate is peeling away at the edges slightly. I could probably live with this to be honest as it's the content that ultimately matters but the binding quality is also poor. It's 'perfect bound' but the glue has already split/cracked in several spreads, leading the bottom of the pages in these spreads becoming detached from the binding. Again, it doesn't reduce the usefulness of the material within, but lessens the quality and perhaps the longevity of the book. All in all I've been happy with the book. I've found it easy to read and a good starting point for my adventures with websites. If you're more experienced or perhaps a quicker learner you may find this book a disappointment but for me it's been ideal. EDIT 13th Jan '16: I found some photos of the poor binding that I'd forgotten about.
