Review: Worth buying instead of Sarah's first book Even if you are not keen on cutting out sugar altogether - this book is simply jam packed full of recipes and even better - ideas of how to prep and pull together things easily I love it as I don't always like to follow a recipe verbatim due to time or fridge content constraints, but the nutrient principles of the book are great and feeding our family including all the kids, with more nutrient rich meals has become much easier as the recipes are so inspiring and cover many food styles and types. From mug cakes to asian food and breads - my 11yo daughter loves to find things to make for tea. It is not a book for a just a diet - but more a reference for a healthier family menu! We still have cake at the weekends and a glass of vino - but this alleviates the guilt!

Review: Three stars seems a bit on the critical side, so I'll try to give a balanced review. I previously reviewed her second offering 'I Quit Sugar for Life' and would recommend that more than this as a starting point- if that's what you're after. Pros of Simplicious: * The book has a high proportion of photos to recipes, so if you like to see what every dish looks like before you cook it, this is great! * Superficial, yes, but the book is well-presented on the whole and you'll enjoy going through it at leisure and highlighting things you want to try * There are some tasty recipes in this book- I have only made 7 so far but with some tweaks they have all turned out to be flavoursome, wholesome and filling. The breakfast section is particularly good and I'm now a complete convert to savoury porridge despite initial reservations! Cons: * This book does contain a small but nevertheless considerable number of recipes with added sugar (usually brown rice syrup). For example in the strawberry and chia seed jam which has 2tsp of added sugar per serve. This is a con if, like me, you're looking for no added sugar inspiration (which IS found in recipes such as the porridge breakfast cups and banana bread from IQS for Life and the IQS blog respectively). * The recipes are often not tasty enough. Often all that's required is added more of whichever spice or herb is in question, but sometimes you can tell from the ingredients that there's just not enough in there to fill everything out and prevent inspid-ness. For example, the flavoured variations of buckwheat groaties are a waste of time and the pizza inspired crumble was frankly watery and disgusting. * The huge push on sustainability is admirable but makes the book into a huge tome which may be overwhelming for a first-time reader just looking for some sugar free recipes. Overall I'd say there's plenty of inspiration to be found in this Sarah Wilson offering. The recipes sometimes do need a bit of tweaking and sometimes you just need to use your intuition and make adjustments. There are beautiful photographs throughout (maybe a few too many of Sarah herself, it does feel a bit indulgent) but on the plus side they do display the food well and it makes you want to cook everything. The breakfast section is strong and I haven't yet found a recipe I haven't liked there. I wasn't eating sugary cereals or museli/toast beforehand, (I found Sarah's books a year ago) but these recipes have given me a huge morning repertoire! It's worth buying for sure, but I wouldn't recommend it specifically as your first sugar free book as there is a huge amount of filler text which might be off putting for some.
