Review: Tilman's books are compulsive reading. Once you start you find it difficult to stop, and then you can't wait to get back to it!

Review: I read this book having previously enjoyed one of Tilman’s mountaineering books and being keen to find out more about his sailing expeditions. This book was written in Tilman’s later years and describes three voyages, each with varying levels of success. It’s safe to say that they generally seem to result in less positive outcomes than his mountaineering expeditions, which makes for the foundation of an interesting read including many hardships and humorous mishaps. As with his other books, the focus of Tilman’s writing seems to be more on the journeys themselves rather than the destinations, which is lucky as, without giving too much away, the intended destinations are seldom reached. Some of the technical terminology used in the book will make more sense to those with sailing experience, but this doesn’t prevent the layman from following the story. Tilman is very understated in his writing, and as with his other works you have to bear this in mind when reading if you want to appreciate the situations described. I think that the magnitude of a lot of the hardships described in the book would only be fully understood by readers who have experienced similar situations themselves. I enjoyed this book, and found one section in particular had me completely gripped, desperately reading and turning the pages to find out the fate of Tilman and his crew. Even the slower-paced sections were plenty entertaining and I frequently drifted off to Greenland in my head whilst reading the book. The epilogue, written more recently by one of Tilman’s old crew members, also provides interesting, insightful reading about what it was like to be on the expedition.
