Review: India is a cornucopia of languages, religions, and wildlife, bringing the world; Buddhism, chess, and yoga. This is a great introduction to the country of India for children aged 6 to 12. Over the 75 pages we are treated to facts and pictures encompassing the culture of India. The book covers amongst other topics; the Bhimbetka cave paintings, the festival of Diwali, the Bhubaneswar spice market, to the Golden Temple at Amritsar. When we look at the great river ganges we learn about its origins but also about the goddess Ganga whose waters nourish the whole of India, and her Hindu temple at Gangotri. When we look at the Taj Mahal we learn that it is a marble mausoleum for a princess who was married to the emperor Shah Jahan, the lush gardens, the black marble writing, and the precious gemstones. A lovely and interesting book about one of the most diversely populated countries in the world.

Review: Condensing information about the whole of India and Indian culture into 73 pages is quite a task! Because there is so much information to be shared and it's impossible to share it all in detail, only tidbit tasters are given about each place or fact. Sometimes Indian words are used without explaining what they are. This makes it a book that may be best enjoyed when read with an adult who knows a lot about India who will be able to fill in the blanks and answer any questions. Alternatively, the book can be used to teach a child how to use internet searches to fill in the details. This book is like a guidebook of India for kids with illustrations rather than photos. Although the artwork is beautiful, as a factual book, I would have personally preferred to see photos of the places mentioned to get a truer feel for them. It would also have been nice to have a little map in each corner to show where the places are. A big map is provided at the beginning of the book which was great. All in all, a book that I think would be wonderful especially for children looking to learn more about their own Indian heritage together with an elder taking them through the pages. But my feeling is that it's perhaps less accessible for a young child to read on their own.
