Review: When I first learnt how to cook, this was the book that I purchased! Easy, straightforward recipes, and you really can learn how to cook within 24 hours! I recommend the chilli and roast chicken to begin with as these were very simple and straightforward. Absolutely love this book to such an extent that years later, I still use it and recommend it to others.

Review: First let me say that the two or three dishes I have tried from this book were quite tasty, with instructions that were relatively easy to follow. Given that this is a cooking book, I therefore cannot completely mark it down. However, it is supposed to teach beginners how to cook, and I believe it fails on this for a number of reasons. Most of the cooked dishes are for a minimum of four people (often six for the soups), the exception being for stir-fries which are for two people (which the author says is only because a wok would otherwise be overloaded). It seems to me that many people setting out to cook for the first time would either be single people, or at least would want to try cooking for one person before cooking for many people. Sadly, it is not feasible to scale down many of the recipes' ingredients for one person and this makes many of the recipes problematical. I guess that different people have different ideas of what constitutes "simple", but I would say that many of the recipes in this book are not simple (although, as said above, the instructions and accompanying photos are quite clear there is often a large number of steps). One example: the "Hardly-any-Prep Prawn Stir-Fry" is described as "the kind of recipe where you can swing by the supermarket on your way home from work, pick up a few bits and have a great meal on the table within ten minutes" - it contains 17 ingredients! (OK, one or two of them you would have already, but even so.) A quick comment about the type of meals the author is recommending: most of them are rich in spices or herbs or garlic which is of course fine if you like that type of food (I personally do but not every meal) but may not suit everyone's taste. The book itself is generally very nicely produced (I have the hardback version), with the recipes clearly presented and with helpful photos on the opposite page so you can see what the steps look like. The instructions are in paragraph format rather than list format, which makes it a little harder to read, but I suppose this is done to keep the recipes to a single page. More seriously, quite a few of the pages do not have page numbers, and this includes every chapter page in the table of contents! This makes it a bit awkward to find the chapter. Minor, I know, but irritating none the less. The book is interspersed with (usually) smiling people who were novices, but have successfully started cooking by taking up the author's recipes. I thought that there were too many of these photos and in any case couldn't they all have been in the introduction, rather than between recipes? In summary, the author is evidently on a mission to teach people to cook - I have to say that I do not believe this book helps that mission, hence two stars.
