Review: I have used a lot of Japanese textbooks over the years. And out of the books I have used, this ranks somewhere above average. This textbook tries to go beyond the beginner level. It does so successfully in some areas, and in other areas it falls into some problems. Good points: - CDROM with some very good dialogue. - The text goes someway beyond the traditional 'Business' Japanese that most textbooks seems to focus on. Units are divided into sections such as pets, crime, education and nature which I feel make the lessons more interesting and relevant to everyday conversation. - Some good Kanji writing sections at the end of each chapter. -Exercises are easy to follow. Poor points: -Lack of kanji throughout the book, and reliance on hiragana. This may sound like a good point for those just starting out working with kanji. However, kanji really needs to be introduced at a good pace for learning. It also facilitates reading, as too much hiragana can slow down reading; since Japanese does not use spaces between words and here Kanji is vital for helping separate words from particles for example. Even basic kanji is not used: for example suki (for 'like') is a simple kanji that isn't even used in the text. -You will need a dictionary! I have lost count on how many occasions I have had to stop reading and use a dictionary to find the meaning of a work. The texts have some vocabulary at the foot of the page, however many words are missing. Some of the words are complicated and are not even in the vocabulary at the back of the book (don't waste your time trying to find them here!). -The exercises are too easy for those wishing to push themselves. Overall, this is a reasonable book that will teach you some useful everyday phrases and grammar. However, this book could be so much better with a little more thought and attention to kanji and vocabulary aspects.
