Description: Where I Find Myself is the first major single book retrospective of one of America's leading photographers. It is organized in inverse chronological order and spans the photographer's whole career to date: from Joel Meyerowitz's most recent picture all the way back to the first photograph he ever took. The book covers all of Joel Meyerowitz's great projects: his work inspired by the artist Morandi, his work on trees, his exclusive coverage of Ground Zero, his trips in the footsteps of Robert Frank across the US, his experiments comparing color and black and white pictures, and of course his iconic street photography work. Joel Meyerovitz is incredibly eloquent and candid about how photography works or doesn't, and this should be an inspiration to anyone interested in photography. Review: I bought this as I am impressed by the photographer. The layout of the book however is EXTREMELY irritating. It runs from recent work (at the beginning of the book), to older work (at the end). It is totally counterintuitive, so much so that I decided to ignore the text (which presumably the photographer had worked hard on), and 'read' the book in a traditional manner ie from front to back, without regard given to the dates, text or indeed captions of the work. Given that it is a well presented work, and the reproduction of the photographs is of good quality, it is a shame that the author has decided to compile the book in such a strange manner. I will, unfortunately, not buy anything else by Mr Meyerowitz. I realise that this will not inconvenience the photographer in any way but it will provide me with a small measure of intellectual recompense.

  • Waterstones Joel Meyerowitz: A Question of Color

    Price: £20.00

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: Traces a key turning point in the history of photography: the young Joel Meyerowitz's early experiments in colour photography. An early advocate of colour photography, Joel Meyerowitz has impacted and influenced generations of artists. For fifty-eight years, the master photographer has documented the US's ever-changing social landscape. For a while, during the late 1960s, Meyerowitz carried two cameras: one loaded with monochrome stock, the other with colour. Just how, when and why US fine-art photographers switched from black-and-white image-making, which was prized within the gallery system, to colour photography, once seen as the preserve of the holiday snapper, has been the cause of much debate. In this book, Meyerowitz tells the story of his early days as a photographer when he was told that serious photographers took black & white pictures. 'But why?' he asked, 'when the world is in colour?' He proceed to buy a colour camera and various rolls of films and to read manuals and experiment with colour techniques: a passion he continued to pursue all his life. • Waterstones Joel Meyerowitz: Wild Flowers

    Price: £45.00

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: This new and expanded edition of Joel Meyerowitz's widely acclaimed photobook, Wild Flowers | ?? now, in a larger format, features new and unpublished images. For nearly forty years Joel Meyerowitz has tended his visual garden in the streets and parks and cities he has visited or lived in. He goes out into the streets open-eyed and passionate, carrying a machine which is perfectly suited to the task of taking it all in. The Leica, as quick as the flick of an eyelash, effortlessly interrupts time, stopping and holding it forever. These walks gave shape to new territory for him, which he began to think of as a garden that reflected the variety of his observations. Then, one day, while editing, Meyerowitz stumbled upon a small group of these flower photographs which he had gathered unknowingly. He began to believe that this innocent premise might be enough to tie together many of his other photographic concerns under the nominal subject of 'flowers,' which, given the surprises of city life, he viewed as flowers gone somewhat berserk | ??and so Wild Flowers was born.
