Review: I've not come across Two-Spirit stories before. I urge you to read this one. It's poetic in its insight, earthy and in your face in its description of life for a young sex worker. Jonny Appleseed is a young Two-Spirit, queer Indigenous person who leaves the reservation; "rez", for the city. Jonny's observations on life, and reflections on growing up on the rez are deliciously honest. There are so many beautiful phrases Joshua Whitehead comes out with. My copy of the book is littered with sticky notes highlighting moments which resonated deeply for me. "Pain only intensifies the real emotions worth feeling" is just one. The structure of this novel is elegant. It's written in the first person, with each short chapter telling an anecdote or fireside tale which contributes to the overall narrative. By the end of the book you are completely inside Jonny's head. If you're not familiar with native Canadian Indian words then, like me, you'll have to look them up. But it's worth it to be uplifted by this story. Highly recommended.

Review: Joshua Whitehead writes honestly and poetically about personal and family matters too many of us pretend we don't see in our own lives.
