Review: ...in more ways than one! ????? KATIE’S PICTURE SHOW ????? JAMES MAYHEW ???? ORCHARD BOOKS ???? 2004 PAPERBACK EDITION ???? I was shocked to find that this informative series of books has been around since this first title came along in 1989, so has already passed its 25th anniversary ~ in fact, Katie is now 28 years old! As the anniversary editions are all the rage, I was happy to pick up some of the older paperback editions, with the original cover illustrations. Not only does each title combine a bit of an adventure with some fun (& a little mischief) but also a good bit of ‘learning without really realising’, which I love in a children's book...the nonchalant touch, as I call it! In this case, a bit of art makes a lasting impression but there is generally far more in the story than first meets the eye, including a bit of basic French! At the end, the youngest reader/listener may even recall the pretty, chunky French word for ‘umbrellas’, a link to why Katie & her Grandma are in the art gallery in the first place. From the back cover: ‘Katie’s first visit to an art gallery turns out to be wonderfully exciting when five famous paintings come alive for her! Join the ever-curious Katie as she discovers that art can be fantastic fun - particularly when you step into the world inside the frame... Includes reproductions of: ?????~The Hay Wain by John Constable ?????~ Madame Moitessier Seated by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres ?????~ Les Parapluies by Pierre-Auguste Renoir ?????~ Tropical Storm With a Tiger by Henri Rousseau ?????~ Dynamic Suprematism by Kasimir Malevich' Measuring in around 25 cm x 21.25 cm, this is a larger than average paperback. Colourfully illustrated throughout, by the author, the quality paperback cover opens to 32 shiny pages and on the first, we find young Katie being just a little bit naughty before she has even got into the art gallery. Leaving Grandma for a rest, after her turn in the revolving door, Katie ventures off to see what she can find. Finding a quiet area of the gallery, Katie decides that ‘PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH’ at her first stop, 'The Hay Wain’ is worth taking a chance on! Suddenly there she is...in the picture, marching through the mud, eating a delicious apple pie...all of it as it turns out...and getting barked at! Time to return to the gallery. And so the story carries on with a different experience at each and when the going gets a bit rough, Katie simply climbs back out of the picture. Even temporarily, whilst on the hunt for a runaway hoop that accidentally flies right out of the picture and bounces off in the art gallery! But where to? That is the question, as her adventures also take Katie into the danger-infested jungle. How does she handle the ‘very different picture’, on loan, in the ‘Exhibition of Modern Art’? Forgetting to check if anyone is looking, Katie gets into a spot of bother in this last picture and needs to be rescued by the guard who tells her, in no uncertain terms, that it is very important to ‘obey notices’! There is also a reminder from the author on the last page: ‘Although in the story Katie did touch the paintings, you must not. This is because they are all very precious and could easily be damaged...’ This page also notes where the paintings are and has other useful information like just looking at a few paintings on a visit & looking hard at each to see the different way each artist paints. A truly lovely book, well written with superb illustrations from the multi-talented James Mayhew and the excellent news is: Katie returns to her picture adventures inKatie Meets The Impressionists , among others, and I think I can feel another collection coming on! And, if you are seeking something different for a ‘Katie’ fan, the National Gallery online shop is the place to go, if you can’t hit the gallery directly. ooOoo A last thought onKatie’s Picture Show : When Katie returns to find Grandma and they go off out ‘to find a cup of tea and a cream cake’, some might well wonder how Katie could possibly contemplate anything else to eat! ooOoo [8 images attached] ~ Images ©JAMES MAYHEW
