Description: Kent's military heritage is well known because of popular tourist attractions such as Dover Castle or Chatham Dockyard, but there are also many lesser-known sites dotted around the county, each with their own story to tell. Most of the sites included here date from the Second World War but there are also many military installations from other eras, from the eerie remains of the towers in the Thames Estuary to the magnificence of Fort Burgoyne. Kent: Britain's Frontline County examines the fascinating ways in which Kent has protected and defended Britain over the centuries. Local author and historian Clive Holden has carefully documented each of these secret gems and photographed them in full colour, giving the reader a wonderful insight into a lesser-known aspect of Kent's proud heritage. • Waterstones Kent Buses

    Price: £15.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: By 1970, the boundaries of the county of Kent had been finalised, with parts, including Bexley, Bromley and Erith, being lost to Greater London. The capital's red buses were still to be found in Dartford; otherwise the rest of west Kent was the territory of London Country Bus Services. The centre of the county, including the Medway towns and Maidstone, was where one could find Maidstone & District's mainly Leyland fleet. Maidstone was also home to the last municipal operator in Kent, finally ceasing in 1992. Beyond Faversham and Ashford was the East Kent Road Car Company, with a fleet of predominantly AEC vehicles. Privatisation saw London Country's operations become Kentish Bus, which was later to be taken over by Arriva. The same fate befell Maidstone & District, while East Kent was sold into the hands of Stagecoach. Very few independent operators ran bus services in Kent in the 1970s, but deregulation and council tendering meant that the smaller concerns were able to enter the fray. Many fell by the wayside, but several still run buses in Kent today, adding to the variety of vehicles and liveries to be found in the county. John Law has been photographing the Kentish bus scene since the early years of the 1970s and has amassed a vast archive of pictures, the best and most interesting of which are displayed here. Price: £14.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: Portrait of the Kent Coast is a photographic journey around the coast of Kent starting in the industrial north of the county, at Dartford with the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge spanning the River Thames. The journey continues on towards the Isle of Sheppey and the Swale Estuary. The shoreline gradually changes from mudflats and industry to shingle and sand and famous seaside towns. The Kent coast is also a key environment for wildlife particularly visiting wildfowl which use the mudflats, marshes and shingle beaches for feeding and breeding. The east coast of Kent changes dramatically to great white cliffs of chalk. These cliffs are a recognizable landmark for incoming visitors to the port of Dover. The south Kent coast is mainly made up of shingle beaches which stretch from Folkestone towards Dungeness which is where the journey ends. In over 140 glorious full-colour images, Andreas Byrne follows the great success of his previous volumes on Canterbury and the County of Kent, to offer a new perspective on the many facets of England.

  • Waterstones Kent's Literary Heritage

    Price: £15.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: The landscape, buildings and people of Kent have provided inspiration for writers for centuries. Whether the writers were natives of the county itself or came as visitors, its coastline, orchards, towns and villages have helped shape the imaginations of some of the most influential of English authors. Among the many writers associated with Kent is Geoffrey Chaucer, who set his famous Canterbury Tales on the pilgrims' route to Thomas Becket's shrine in Canterbury Cathedral. Charles Dickens spent his formative years in Kent and later returned to the county when he bought his mansion Gads Hill Place and his holiday home at Broadstairs. Kent provided the setting for many of his novels. Charles Darwin worked on his groundbreaking theory of evolution at his Kentish home, Down House; Winston Churchill produced much of his finest writing whilst living at Chartwell; Ian Fleming visited the county regularly and it features often in the Bond novels; H. E. Bates' popular Darling Buds of May stories are set in the heart of rural Kent where he himself lived for many years. This book explores the fascinating history of Kent's remarkable literary heritage as well as being a guide to the locations where that heritage can still be found.
