Description: There are a few new [ Fair Isle or Shetland lace] knitting books. but this is the first one to come out this season and has set the bar high.' - Shiny New Books Mati Ventrillon's inspiration comes from the technique of creating patterns with multiple colours that was first used by the women of Fair Isle, one of the Shetland Islands, more than two centuries ago. Her designs, which have featured on the Chanel catwalk, are inspired by tradition but use her own modern interpretation of colour and pattern arrangement. The book includes fisherman jumpers with high, crew and slash necks, a poncho, neck warmer, cowl and long scarf, fingerless gloves and hand and wrist warmers, as well as the traditional fisherman's hats known as keps. The patterns demonstrate how to experiment with colour and play with backgrounds. They are accompanied by expert tips on yarns and finishing. Inspirational photography provides a window into life on this most remote of Scottish islands. Www. mativentrillon. Co. uk Instagram: @fairisle_knitwear. Review: This is a lovely book and I can't wait to make some of the designs in it. There are lots of good accessories which would be quick projects for Christmas presents - mittens, fingerless mitts, beautiful hats. The jumpers are traditional in design which makes them timeless and very wearable. They are also largely unisex. I like the fact that you are given three colour palettes - two-tone, traditional colours and more contemporary (which is still very tasteful, I think). The actual patterns are drawn from old traditional Fairisle motifs which I love. The only thing I would question is that the sizing is adjusted by going up a needle size so if you are bigger your knitting would be more open-gauge which personally I wouldn't like as I like the dense character of the Fairisle knitting. Overall this book is a definite must for anyone who loves proper traditional Fairisle knitting.

Review: So much to learn before you can start ... I've googled so many You Tube videos and still only learning what I need to buy. I have knit lots and some quite fancy things so thought I'd be fine with a bit of fair isle. If you haven't used circular or double pointed needles think twice about this book as you could spend a lot more than you think on needles and wool
