Review: A jam-packed 4th edition from the seemingly well regarded Aaron Wilkes, covering all things Invasion, war, mystery, murder, revolt and plague between 1066 to 1558. This edition offers an extra 48 pages compared to the last offering. A lovely resource to support your children's school work and to prep for future lessons.from home. It offers a great deal of testing to ensure your child understands the topic before moving on (see pics). The Criticisms It feels rather old-school, not far removed from study material 15 plus years ago. I don't feel there's enough here to stimulate the scemata of the tech-focused, social media-driven, celebrity-admiring youth of today. The 'comic book strip' type animations are a good attempt at being 'in-vogue' but the material, though good, is not engaging enough for the generation of Horrible History lovers. On the subject of Horible Histories, it is apparent that the book has set a similar theme not too dissimilar to HH. The pages are rather thin, though the graphics are bright and vibrant. There's plenty going on at each page turn to capture interest. It's the written material that we found lacking, my young one, who's a history buff, seemed disinterested by this one. He has a number of quality history books and definitive guides. What would be useful for children learning at home, would be an answer section or even summary answers for the more complicated questions. Even a tear-out one would be a welcome addition. But I imagine this would only be included in the Teachers' Handbook. £20 is on the expensive side for just a text book when there's more in-depth content out there. Not worth the price in my humble opinion.

Description: Many Britons like to think they have a basic understanding of Britain's amazing history. The Roman invasion, Alfred and the Danes, 1066, Magna Carta, Bannockburn, Agincourt, the Wars of the Roses, Henry VIII and his wives, the Reformation, etc., etc. The trouble is that concentrating on just a few over-familiar landmarks like these can give a distorted picture of the land we live in. What would our history look like if, instead of looking at all the bits everybody knows, we started telling it through some of the bits everybody doesn't knows? We set off to find out. The result is Unexpected Britain, tracing the story of Britain from a time before Rome to a time within the lives of people still living, but going beyond the well known to explore a world of different angles and fascinating, little-known facts that bring fresh life to the story of what Britain has been and what Britain is.

Description: The two-and-a-half centuries after 1066 were momentous ones in the history of Britain. In 1066, England was conquered for the last time. The Anglo-Saxon ruling class was destroyed and and the English became a subject race, dominated by a Norman-French dynasty and aristocracy. This book shows how the English domination of the kingdom was by no means a foregone conclusion. The struggle for mastery in the book's title is in reality the struggle for different masteries within Great Britain. The book weaves together the histories of England, Scotland and Wales in a new way and argues that all three, in their different fashions, were competing for domination. Price: £10.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: A radical retelling of the most important event in English history - the Norman invasion of 1066. The Norman Conquest is the single most important event in English history. On this invasion and 'regime change' pivoted the second millennium of English history. This is well recognised, what is not is how long and hard the English people fought to deny William 'the Bastard', Duke of Normandy his prize. Rather than being the smooth transition peddled by pro-Norman historians, the Norman Conquest was a brutal and violent takeover by an army of occupation. Unknown thousands of rebellious thegns resisted the Norman regime, the most famous being Hereward, but there were plenty of willing collaborators among England's clergy, who pushed for William to be crowned king. In return he let them retain their sees and abbacies, as well as the vast tracts of land. Peter Rex tells the whole story of the Conquest of England by the Normans from its genesis in the deathbed decision of King Edward the Confessor in January 1066 to recommend Harold Godwinson as his successor, to the crushing of the last flickers of English resistance in June 1076.
