Review: A jam-packed 4th edition from the seemingly well regarded Aaron Wilkes, covering all things Invasion, war, mystery, murder, revolt and plague between 1066 to 1558. This edition offers an extra 48 pages compared to the last offering. A lovely resource to support your children's school work and to prep for future lessons.from home. It offers a great deal of testing to ensure your child understands the topic before moving on (see pics). The Criticisms It feels rather old-school, not far removed from study material 15 plus years ago. I don't feel there's enough here to stimulate the scemata of the tech-focused, social media-driven, celebrity-admiring youth of today. The 'comic book strip' type animations are a good attempt at being 'in-vogue' but the material, though good, is not engaging enough for the generation of Horrible History lovers. On the subject of Horible Histories, it is apparent that the book has set a similar theme not too dissimilar to HH. The pages are rather thin, though the graphics are bright and vibrant. There's plenty going on at each page turn to capture interest. It's the written material that we found lacking, my young one, who's a history buff, seemed disinterested by this one. He has a number of quality history books and definitive guides. What would be useful for children learning at home, would be an answer section or even summary answers for the more complicated questions. Even a tear-out one would be a welcome addition. But I imagine this would only be included in the Teachers' Handbook. £20 is on the expensive side for just a text book when there's more in-depth content out there. Not worth the price in my humble opinion.
