  • Waterstones An Analysis of John Locke's Two Treatises of Government

    Price: £6.50

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: John Locke's 1689 Two Treatises of Government is a key text in the history of political theory - one whose influence remains marked on modern politics, the American Constitution and beyond. Two Treatises is more than a seminal work on the nature and legitimacy of government. It is also a masterclass in two key critical thinking skills: evaluation and reasoning. Evaluation is all about judging and assessing arguments - asking how relevant, adequate and convincing they are. And, at its heart, the first of Locke's two treatises is pure evaluation: a long and incisive dissection of a treatise on the arguments in Sir Robert Filmer's Patriarcha. Filmer's book had defended the doctrine that kings were absolute rulers whose legitimacy came directly from God (the so-called 'divine right of kings"), basing his arguments on Biblical explanations and evidence. Locke carefully rebutted Filmer's arguments, on their own terms, by reference to both the Bible and to recorded history. Finding Filmer's evidence either to be insufficient or unacceptable, Locke concluded that his argument for patriarchy was weak to the point of invalidity. In the second of Locke's treatises, the author goes on to construct his own argument concerning the sources of legitimate power, and the nature of that power. Carefully building his own argument from a logical consideration of man in 'the state of nature", Locke creates a convincing argument that civilised society should be based on natural human rights and the social contract. Description: The end is coming. Logen Ninefingers might only have one more fight in him - but it's going to be a big one. Battle rages across the North, the King of the Northmen still stands firm, and there's only one man who can stop him. His oldest friend, and his oldest enemy. It's past time for the Bloody-Nine to come home. With too many masters and too little time, Superior Glokta is fighting a different kind of war. A secret struggle in which no-one is safe, and no-one can be trusted. His days with a sword are far behind him. It's a good thing blackmail, threats and torture still work well enough. Jezal dan Luthar has decided that winning glory is far too painful, and turned his back on soldiering for a simple life with the woman he loves. But love can be painful too, and glory has a nasty habit of creeping up on a man when he least expects it. While the King of the Union lies on his deathbead, the peasants revolt and the nobles scramble to steal his crown. No-one believes that the shadow of war is falling across the very heart of the Union. The First of the Magi has a plan to save the world, as he always does. But there are risks. There is no risk more terrible, after all, than to break the First Law. Waterstones Last Argument Of Kings - shop the best deal online on thebookbug.co.uk

  • Waterstones Darwin's Argument by Analogy

    Price: £24.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: In On the Origin of Species (1859), Charles Darwin put forward his theory of natural selection. Conventionally, Darwin's argument for this theory has been understood as based on an analogy with artificial selection. But there has been no consensus on how, exactly, this analogical argument is supposed to work - and some suspicion too that analogical arguments on the whole are embarrassingly weak. Drawing on new insights into the history of analogical argumentation from the ancient Greeks onward, as well as on in-depth studies of Darwin's public and private writings, this book offers an original perspective on Darwin's argument, restoring to view the intellectual traditions which Darwin took for granted in arguing as he did. From this perspective come new appreciations not only of Darwin's argument but of the metaphors based on it, the range of wider traditions the argument touched upon, and its legacies for science after the Origin. • Waterstones The Trojan Kings of Britain

    Price: £22.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: The Trojan Kings of Britain presents a theory that the legend of Brutus, descendant of Aeneas of Troy, migrating to Britain with many other Trojan descendants is actually based on real events. Examining original sources with a fresh eye, Caleb Howells constructs a compelling argument based on the chronology of events, archaeological findings, and linguistic, cultural, genetic and ancient literary evidence. He also draws parallels between historical individuals and legendary characters such as Agamemnon and Midas. Offering a fresh perspective on the history of rule in Britain, this well-researched book is a must-read for anybody with an interest in how history and legend often intersect.

    Price: £11.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: A major memoir of the Second World War reissued for the centenary of Vernon Scannell's birth. Scannell is considered one of the finest poets of the 1945 war. This book is based on his experiences. John Bain (Scannell's real name) is a good soldier who becomes a deserter in 1942. He walks away from the battle at Wadi Akarit where he saw fellow soldiers casually stealing from the bodies of their dead comrades. He is disgusted - and starts walking back to Tripoli where he's picked up by the military police. The book describes the harsh interrogations he was subjected to. He is sentenced to serve in the military detention barracks at Alexandria. Lawrence Durrell made the city famous with his Four Xx but Bain describes experiences that are anything but romantic. The endless brutal routine wears all the prisoners down. The book gives bleak detail after bleak detail after bleak detail. Bain returned to serve in Normandy and celebrated the end of the war by leaving the army. In an introduction, Scannell hoped the book 'will tell readers something about the Second World War - and perhaps all wars - that is not found in other accounts of military life. I hope too that it might throw a little light on the nature of human courage.'. Waterstones Argument of Kings - shop the best deal online on thebookbug.co.uk

  • Waterstones Why Argument Matters

    Price: £20.00

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: Hailed by the New York Times as a book that 'examines the role that argument has played throughout history and how it has shaped human existence" 'An invigorating reflection on the nature and value of disagreement. Sharp and taut. A lesson in a well-constructed argument itself." | ?? Publishers Weekly, starred review 'Perhaps more than any other commentary, Why Argument Matters illuminates the root causes of our partisan, venomous, irrational times | ??and yet somehow rescues from the morass the true nature of argument, its power and beauty." | ?? Michael Wolff, author of Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House From Eve's crafty exchange with the serpent, to Martin Luther King Jr.'s soaring, subtle ultimatums, to the throes of Twitter | ??argument's drainpipe | ??the human desire to prevail with words has been not just a moral but an existential compulsion. In this dazzling reformulation of argument, renowned critic Lee Siegel portrays the true art of argument as much deeper and far more embracing than mere quarrel, dispute, or debate. It is the supreme expression of humanity's longing for a better life, born of empathy and of care for the world and those who inhabit it. With wit, passion, and striking insights, Siegel plumbs the emotional and psychological sources of clashing words, weaving through his exploration the untold story of the role argument has played in societies throughout history. Each life, he maintains, is an argument for that particular way of living; every individual style of argument is also a case that is being made for that person's right to argue. Argument is at the heart of the human experience, and language, at its most liberated and expressive, inexorably bends toward argument.
