Review: This book arrived extremely promptly and in very good condition. Despite this it was extremely reasonably priced. Lonesome traveller is not as captivating as on the road but it's an interesting portrait of the fascinating Jack Kerouac.

Description: Jack Kerouac died in 1969 at the age of forty-seven. Most of his friends survived him. Our idea was to seek them out and talk with them about Jack's life and their own lives. The final result, we hoped, would be a big, transcontinental conversation, complete with interruptions, contradictions, old grudges and bright memories, all of them providing a reading of the man himself through the people he chose to populate his work.' In this kaleidoscopic portrait of Jack Kerouac, William Burroughs, Carolyn Cassady, Gregory Corso, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Allen Ginsberg, Gary Snyder, Gore Vidal and many others talk, argue and reminisce about their times with him. But alongside these luminaries of the Beat generation are the voices of those who knew a different side of Kerouac: the working men, the childhood friends, the bar companions, the lovers. Fascinating, honest and richer than any orthodox biography could be, Jack's Book documents Kerouac's genius in its full, tragic, contradictory glory.

But when Little Dog becomes an unexpected member of Lonesome Bog's Collection of Things, the loners forge an unlikely friendship. At night, Lonesome Bog sang Little Dog lullabies to help him sleep and shushed him when he had bad dreams about neighbourhood dogs. She even said Little Dog could keep her favourite boot forever. Little Dog discovers the extraordinary Collection of Life within Lonesome Bog and persuades the other dogs - and their people - to see for themselves. Little Dog is finally seen for who he is - brave, friendly and loyal - and Lonesome Bog's extraordinary Collection of Life is appreciated by all. Magnificently illustrated, Lonesome Bog and Little Dog celebrates misfits, both wild and domestic, while exploring the hidden beauty and fragility of peat bogs.

Description: Jack Kerouac was one of America's great writers of the latter half of the 20th century, yet he endured a life characterized by persistent hardship and disillusion. Leading Kerouac scholar Paul Maher Jr. targets the writer's embattled insight of self as central to his life and work. He reveals how Kerouac's troubled interactions with alcohol, drugs, and spirituality stamped its importance on his autobiographical prose and poetry and created a singular language that united thoughts on the human condition and spiritual liberation. Becoming Kerouac: A Writer In His Time affixes Kerouac's life and art in a fresh way, giving readers a rich perspective from which to understand this 20th-century literary genius. Using unpublished archival material, Becoming Kerouac focuses on the writer's critical formative years --1940 to 1957-- to demonstrate his growth as a novelist and poet. Maher contends that Kerouac developed his singular language to capture human consciousness as it never had before. His futilities catapulted American literature to reflect its restless post-World War II anxieties. Narrating the events that comprised Kerouac's life, biographers have long struggled to illustrate his complexness and the contradictions that shaped his determinations and dogged his relationships. But without consideration of the writing, the troubles in life fail to reveal their deeper resonances by skillfully analyzing the work while tracing the events. Maher achieves a full portrait, revealing struggles that problematize his work. Becoming Kerouac fuses Kerouac's life and art to comprehend this misunderstood literary genius.

Description: His first novel is a revelation. the writing is vivid, serious and extraordinary. wonderful' The Times The Sea is My Brother is Jack Kerouac's very first novel, begun shortly after his tour as a merchant sailor in 1942. Lost during his lifetime, it is an intense portrait of friendship and brotherhood and a meditation on the desire to escape society, following the fortunes of two men as they impulsively decide to work their passage on the S.S. Westminster: drinking, arguing, playing cards, dodging torpedoes and contemplating the vast, terrible beauty of the sea. Published with fragments of early stories and letters, this visceral work gives a unique insight into the young Kerouac and the formation of his genius. 'What's clear from this newly published first novel is that Kerouac was positively fizzing with talent at an early age' Sunday Times.
