Review: Simenon took Maigret away from Paris for several of his investigations. Some worked better than others. This one, set in America, and first published in 1949, is superb. Maigret is on a tour of the USA to understand American policing methods. He becomes interested and absorbed in a courtroom drama featuring five airmen from a local airbase who are suspected of being involved in the death of a woman whose body is found on nearby railroad tracks. The atmosphere and plot are both handled brilliantly. There is a "12 Angry Men" feel to some of the court room scenes, but it is the observations of America that are so telling, and make this book feel alive and vibrant. "They have everything", Maigret observes of the people he sees - well-fed, well-clothed, living in a scientific way to allow them to lead comfortable lives. And yet, just under the surface, violent tensions bubble and simmer. A book written over 70 years ago still feels strangely contemporary with these outsider views of the richest country on earth. Simenon plays a trick on the reader at the end of the book, which may disappoint some, but it actually works really well in the wider context of Maigret being no more than an observer on the side lines in just one more American crime. A 175-page masterwork from Simenon; lean, spare, beautifully observed. No-one working in the crime genre today comes anywhere close to capturing the complexities of life in such an elegant and brief way.

Review: Very bland and of course misses the essence of Maigret which is France, French people, French atmosphere etc etc. It’s worth reading for the contrast between France and the US because of the acute reflections on US society at least in the 1950’s
