Review: I've been looking for a decent Malaysian Food Cookbook that isn't too 'chefy'. This is one of two that I've bought this week on Amazon and it is also the first one to be in my possession. Had to wait for it to come back into stock but it was worth the wait. I did check the 'Look Inside' preview which piqued my interest a lot then I happened to be near a Waterstones so nipped into see if they had a copy for me to browse through-they did. I liked what I saw during that browse. My copy arrived earlier today and I've already completed one of the recipes-admittedly, it is the Kaffir Lime and Lemongrass infused Gin but it's a start. I cannot wait for the 24 hour infusion period to be over so that I can taste it thoroughly-3 or 4 G&Ts made from this recipe should give me a good idea of how good it is. I love the flavours and aromas of SE Asia so I am expecting nothing but good things from this starting recipe. On to the rest of the book. It is impossible to lose that's for sure-the bright pink cover ensures that it will never got lost among'st the rest of your books. It is full of great photos of the dishes-usually 1 page for the pic and the opposite one for the recipes (not every recipe has its photo included). The recipes are well explained and easy to follow (based on my first hour of looking through the book). If you are a fan of Thai cooking then you should have all of the ingredients you'll need-or know where to get them. My local Thai food 'mini mart' has a fair selection of Malaysian ingredients but you should get most of what you need at your local Superstore. There appears to be more awareness of Malaysian food these days in the UK thanks to some of the celebrity chefs on tv doing their 'far east food tours'. Where Ping has the edge (for me anyway) is that her book is mainly 'home cooking' and apart from the odd recipe all recipes should be successful for us 'westerners'. I really like this book-it will used a lot. Thanks Ping for sharing your knowledge with us.

Review: I was an avid viewer of Masterchef and thought Ping was wonderful. I am also a collector of cookbooks so when this came out it was an obvious choice. It is a beautiful looking book and the recipes seem good too - I have made the Cantonese roast pork which was delicious. Each recipe has an accompanying photo (most of them are of the dish) and a short introduction which I really like as I don't know Malaysian food that well. There's a section on ingredients, one on pastes and sambals, snacks and small dishes with lots of street food like dishes, salads and brother, rice and noodles, meat and poultry, vegetables and eggs, 'English' food (anything vaguely western and sweet things. It should be a great cookbook but it also feels like it was done in a rush. For example the index is dreadful - despite a whole chapter on rice and noodles there isn't a single entry for rice and the Cantonese roast pork isn't in the index either. The recipe I have tried was tasty but felt like it was missing a vital step and another instructions wasn't clear. I have cooked from it and will continue to do so but this sadly didn't live up to expectations.
