Review: This is an amazing travel guide, crammed full of information about travel from London to any country in Europe, whether it be Spain, Estonia, Ireland or Ukraine. This is different to most other travel guides as it really feels as though the writer (Mark Smith) is giving you this information directly (which is what he IS doing), and explaining the best ways to find the best fares for the journey you are going to make. Before discovering this book (and the website as a result) thanks to a man who runs our nearby music academy who fetched it out of a library (I got this red-cover version afterwards as the timetables are more up-to-date here than in the original book), I relied on RailEurope, which gives you some information about western European trains (not in as much detail as Seat 61), and almost nothing on eastern Europe or travel beyond Europe, so this book was an extremely useful tool to finding out about train travel to/from these more exotic destinations, as well as the more obvious ones such as France, Germany and Spain. We made a trip in Europe by train recently (London-Amsterdam-Vienna-Berlin-Paris-London) and we wouldn't have made the trip without Mark Smith's invaluable info (in particular the bahn.de booking system which (for German trains or those which operate in Germany for part of their journey, a few other non-German trains too) gave us incredibly cheap fares, much more so than those offered by Rail Europe for the same journey). The Seat 61 website is outstanding - it's actually like going on a holiday when you visit the website and all its information and photos on all manner of trains and journeys, not just in Europe but around the world. Alongside the trains you need to take to get to a destination, Mark also explains the other things you need to foster into your travel planning agenda, such as how to arrange Russian visas and Belarus transit visas for when you travel to Russia. Overall this is a fantastic guide and is such a pleasure to get your teeth into over and over again that I have to say that if Mark Smith is in Seat 61, then I'm in Seat 62! If you are planning on taking the train through Europe from the UK then this is a must buy, even more so if you're a rail enthusiast.

Review: Looks like a great book, but it’s largely made up of timetables and ticket prices, so given that the information is from 2010 it’s out of date.
