Review: I recommend this book a lot as Mr. Araki explains several practices of storytelling as a whole extremely well. If you intend to write a story at all, not just Manga, you should read this book.

Review: There were many parts I like about the book: the author offers some useful tips on characterization, and says some particularly insightful things about life experiences and thematic concerns. Other parts of the book I'm taking with a large pinch of salt. The author is known for a long-running shounen manga, so some of his tips are highly specific to the shounen genre. Like "the main character should never be set back for more than a couple of chapters", "it is good to name your series after your main character", or "these are the things you can put in the first page of your manga". Those tips struck me as somewhat superficial, though I'm sure they were important survival strategies in the brutal world of manga serialization. All in all, I did learn some useful things from this book. However, in my opinion Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics offers deeper insight into the art from.
