    Brand: Waterstones

Description: When Frenchmen Charles Blondin became the first daredevil to tightrope walk across Niagara Falls in June 1859, he opened the doors of imagination for all sorts of human ingenuity (and stupidity) for which the Falls became famous for more than a century. Since that day, Niagara Falls has become ingrained in the fabric of America's soul, an icon of its all-natural beauty and, for a long time, its most famous spiritual and tourist hotspot, cherished for weddings, boat rides and 8 million visitors mesmerized by the mighty crash of nature's tonic. The Little Book of Niagara Falls is full of all the waterfall-fun you can think of - stats, jokes, quotes, notes, stories, icons, and origins - a tiny tome for your home, maybe even a bedside companion, to inspire your next quest to America's northeast. Who knows? You may even take a barrel with you - and go for ride over the side!' My blood shudders still, although I am no coward, at the grandeur of the Creator's power; and I gazed motionless on this new display of the irresistible force of one of His elements.' John James Audubon The name Niagara originates from the indigenous peoples, the Iroquoian, nearby settlement called Onguiaahra - pronounced 'Niagara' - meaning 'point of land cut in two'.

Description: In the follow-up to his critically acclaimed debut monograph Sleeping by the Mississippi, Alec Soth turned his eye to another iconic body of water, Niagara Falls. As with his photographs of the Mississippi, Soth's pictures of Niagara are less about natural wonder than human desire. I went to Niagara for the same reason as the honeymooners and suicide jumpers, says Soth, the relentless thunder of the Falls just calls for big passion. Working over the course of two years on both the American and Canadian sides of the Falls using a large-format 8x 10 camera, the photographs are rigorously composed and richly detailed. Soth depicts newlyweds and naked lovers, motel parking lots and pawn shop wedding rings. Throughout the book, Soth has interspersed a number of love letters from the subjects he photographed. We read about teenage crushes, workplace affairs, heartbreak and suicide. Oscar Wilde wrote of the Falls, The sight of the stupendous waterfall must be one of the earliest, if not the keenest, disappointments in American married life. In Soth's Niagara, we see both the passion and the disappointment. His pictures are a remarkable portrayal of modern love and it's aftermath. Alec Soth (b. 1969) is a photographer born and based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He has published over twenty-five books including Sleeping by the Mississippi (2004), NIAGARA (2006) Broken Manual (2010) and Songbook (2015). Soth has had over fifty solo exhibitions including survey shows organized by Jeu de Paume in Paris (2008), the Walker Art Center in Minnesota (2010) and Media Space in London (2015). Soth has been the recipient of numerous fellowships and awards, including the Guggenheim Fellowship (2013). In 2008, Soth created Little Brown Mushroom, a multi-media enterprise focused on visual storytelling. Soth is represented by Sean Kelly in New York, Weinstein Gallery in Minneapolis, Fraenkel Gallery in San Francisco, LOOCK Galerie in Berlin and is a member of Magnum Photos.

Description: A tale of murder, loss and romance in the mist of Niagara Falls: it is the crowning achievement of Joyce Carol Oates's career to date. A man climbs over the railings and plunges into Niagara Falls. He's a newly-wed, and his bride has been left behind in the honeymoon suite the morning after their wedding. For two weeks, Ariah, the deserted bride, waits by the side of the roaring waterfall for news of her husband's recovered body. During her vigil, an unlikely new love story begins to unfold when she meets a wealthy lawyer who is transfixed by her strange, otherworldly gaze. So it all begins, in the 1950s, with the dark foreboding of the Falls as the sinister background to the tragedy. From this cataclysmic event unfurls a drama of parents and their children; of secrets and sins; of lawsuits, murder and, eventually redemption. As Ariah's children learn that their past is enmeshed with a hushed-up scandal involving radioactive waste materials, they must confront not only their personal history but America's murky past: the despoiling of the American landscape and the corruption and greed of the massive industrial expansion of the 1950s and 1960s. This novel of tremendous sweep and pace is about the American family in crisis - but also about America itself in the mid-20th century. This book alone places Joyce Carol Oates definitively in the company of the Great American Novelists. Waterstones The Falls - shop the best deal online on thebookbug.co.uk
