Review: Read these books. It doesn’t matter if you read the mortal engines series first, as the fever crumb trilogy gives foundation to some events and characters that appear centuries later in mortal engines. It all fits together very nicely but leaves room for more stories between the two series.

Review: I spent the whole book thinking 'Where's Arlo, where's Arlo?' 'Is Arlo coming back?' 'Is that Arlo in disguise?' Alas I was wrong every time, Reeve is not doing himself any favours, he is a self confessed erratic writer, he kills decent characters off that he's invested oddles of time in. Its disappointing, but why is it? Is he aiming for some perfection of the teenage angst? Why can't he allow someone some good old fashioned longterm fortune, should it be all doom and gloom... so if you like your fantasy dark and foreboding read on, but expect no happy ending, except maybe a fashionable but highly unbelievable same sex tryst. Having said that the writing style is top notch, it keeps you riveted, despite disappointments. But, I would not like to live in this world - thousands of years of endemic slavery or running for your life from sadistic mobile cities. Its great writing but full of very unsavoury characters. Enjoy if you can.
