Review: I’m only 45 pages in, and already know you won’t regret buying this book at all. You don’t have to read this review much further. … Ok overzealous Reviews Reviewer, here ya go: I’m a frequent and avid outdoors person, but I’m new to climbing (Oct 2020). I met a friend of a friend who was studying to become a climbing guide and needed a “fresh mind” with little-to-no climbing experiene. I immediately jumped on the opportunity to be a student… and that’s how I contributed to the sport’s surge in popularity. I’ve always had aspirations to summit many of the peaks in my California backyard - The Eastern Sierra; I just didn’t know where to start, and I wanted to do it right. That said, I appreciate how The Mountaineers concisely explain and illustrate the how-to’s that surround backcountry safety, gear, clothing, wilderness first aid, and the list goes on… and on, and on. With the backcountry adventures I’ve been blessed to experience, I’m finding that some of the book’s contents serve as a thorough refresher on basic (and highly important) topics. Yet, I can also see how even climbers with decades of knowledge would benefit from having this reference in their library. If you’re like me when it comes to being new to climbing, you’ll find this book’s pages easy to obsess over and easy to digest. I plan to read it from cover to cover before setting foot on an approach, and I don’t mind that one bit. Speaking of covers, I remove the sleeve from hardcovers while I read them, and my purchase of this book arrived with “oil” stains on the edges of the cover. It’s upsetting to know I purchased something brand new, only to find that it’s been mishandled by the seller - a tolerable cosmetic nuisance at worst, but still disappointing. I’ll leave you with one final thought: GET this book.

  • Waterstones Mountaineering in the Ecrins Massif

    Price: £14.95

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: Mountaineering in the Ecrins Massif showcases the Ecrins' most beautiful summits through a selection of the area's best lower grade snow, rock and mixed climbs. Authors Frederic Chevaillot, Paul Grobel and Jean-Rene Minelli have chosen 25 classic Ecrins routes - graded between F and AD - that have come to be regarded as classics due to their quality, their altitude or, simply, their easy access. These routes provide the essential pleasures of mountaineering: getting off the beaten track, enjoying the pure mountain air and delighting in the charms of the high mountains. Most of these routes are at the boundary between hiking and technical alpinism and should be within the capabilities of any fit hiker-mountaineer. Routes and peaks featured include: the Aiguille du Goleon; the north ridge of the Aiguille Dibona; the south ridge of Pic Coolidge; the north-east face of the Meije Orientale; and the traverse of the Barre des Ecrins ridge, plus many more. Each route features a detailed and comprehensive route description, a sketch map and a route summary detailing the start point, difficulty, timings, height gain, best time of year and the gear required. A conscious decision was made to limit the selection to relatively easy climbs, and so the routes described in this book - a mere fraction of the climbs in the magnificent Ecrins Massif - should be within the capabilities of almost all mountaineers.

Description: Full of eccentric characters, Killing Dragons is the story of the first British mountaineers to tackle the Alpine summits of Switzerland during the late eighteenth century. Originally the explorers of this area were poorly equipped, wearing ordinary shoes and no protective clothing. The British arrived intent on reaching every Alpine summit, and 'mountaineering' was born. The title refers to the mythical creatures said to inhabit these peaks: 'Here be dragons,' said the old maps.

  • Waterstones The Wild Within

    Price: £12.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: All mountaineers develop differently. Some go higher, some try ever-steeper faces and others specialise in a particular range or region. I am increasingly drawn to remoteness - to places where few others have trod.' The Wild Within is the third book from Simon Yates, one of Britain's most accomplished and daring mountaineers. With his insatiable appetite for adventure and exploratory mountaineering, Yates leads unique expeditions to unclimbed peaks in the Cordillera Darwin in Tierra del Fuego, the Wrangell St-Elias ranges on the Alaska-Yukon border, and Eastern Greenland. Laced with dry humour, he relates his own experience of the rapid commercialisation of mountain wilderness, while grappling with his new-found commitments as a family man. At the same time he must endure his role in the film adaptation of Joe Simpson's Touching The Void, having to relive the events of that trip to Peru for a Hollywood director. Yates' subsequent escape to the some of the world's most remote mountains isn't quite the experience it once was, as he witnesses first hand the advance of modern communications into the wilderness, signalled by the ubiquitous mobile phone masts appearing in once-deserted mountain valleys. He is left to dwell on the remaining significance of mountain wilderness and must rediscover what the notion of 'wild' means for him now.

  • Waterstones Mountaineers

    Price: £25.00

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: Celebrating a tradition of bravery, thirst for knowledge, and pursuit of glory, this book tells the stories of the most famous mountaineers in history and explores the climbs that they conquered. Mountaineers is filled with stirring tales of adventure and intriguing characters, from the Brits who insisted on hauling cases of vintage champagne up to Everest base camp in 1924, to the Italian Duke of the Abruzzi who took 10 iron bedsteads up Alaska's Malaspina glacier. It chronicles the stories of the pioneers who first conquered the heights of this planet, from Otzi the Iceman to Edmund Hillary, important scientific discoveries that were made along the way, and accounts of great bravery, fellowship, altruism, and humour in the face of adversity. The book features fact files for over 100 famous mountaineers and stunning photography of the mountains they scaled, and contains rare artefacts that were found on their journeys, previously unpublished photographs, and specially commissioned route maps to recreate history's greatest ascents. The book also charts the development of technology, equipment, and techniques from the tweed hacking jackets and pipe-smoking of the early mountaineers to the sophisticated kit being used today.
