Description: A few years ago Lally Snow moved to a Dorset village with her husband and three small children, having spent over a decade as a war photographer, foreign correspondent and film maker living in Kabul. She covered the conflict there as well as other wars from Gaza to Eastern Ukraine, and Iraq. In the late winter of 2021-22, Lally decided to rent an allotment, despite having only a rudimentary knowledge of gardening. She was starting from scratch and setting herself the dual challenge of growing an allotment at the same time as growing a family. This is a heart-warming, wry and at times tearful account of Lally's travails as a mother and novice allotment holder, counterpointing horticultural progress with the perils of parenting. Along the way she reflects on the drudgery of English rural domesticity after a professional life chasing war and adventure, the history of the allotment since Saxon times, and the wonderful moment when gardening becomes fun rather than just feeding a family. Description: Grow beautiful bee friendly blooms to create a buzz in your garden. Start by unwrapping your Growbar and place it with the brown protective paper facing upwards, into a container with plenty of space to allow it to expand. Gently pour half a litre of water into the tray and position indoors on a warm, bright sunny windowsill. The seeds will need to be a cosy 22° to germinate. Water regularly and ensure the Growbar is perfectly moist, it should remain the colour of a rich dark ginger cake. After a few weeks you should have a bar neatly dotted with little seedlings. These will be happy growing together in the bar for a further month in their sunny location. When the seedlings have produced 4-8 leaves you may then gently separate them, being careful to not to damage the delicate roots, and plant them in individual pots or a sunny weed-free spot in the garden. Plants grown in the ground with plenty of space and sunlight will produce more abundant fragrant foliage but it is possible to grow the seedlings in large containers on the balcony or patio. How to identify your seedlings: Hyssop seedlings have small green oval shaped flat leaves. Verbena bonariensis seedlings have slightly hairy, jagged-shaped leaves on pinkish stems. Lavender seedlings are fragrant with long, silvery leaves. Waterstones The Bee Bar - shop the best deal online on thebookbug.co.uk

  • Waterstones Philosophy of the Family

    Price: £24.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: Almost everyone grows up in a family, and family ties play an important role in daily life. But what exactly is a 'family'? What is a 'family tie'? We use the general concept of 'family' in many contexts - in fiction, in talk shows, in law, in politics - and yet one person's family may be strikingly different from another's. This introductory guide sets out to examine the multiple meanings of the family and related concepts. It explores the different roles played by these concepts in our attempts to understand who we are, where we belong, and what we owe to whom, and the relationships between individual, family, and society. Grounded in philosophy and ethics, the book also draws extensively from other disciplines such as law and sociology, discussing the concrete implications of these ideas for issues such as parental love, marriage and divorce, family autonomy, and assisted reproduction. • Waterstones Family Law in Context

    Price: £55.00

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: In the last 50 years, Irish family law and Irish social attitudes towards the family have changed beyond recognition. Although the constitutional idea of the family is still based on marriage, family law now embraces and provides for a diversity of family forms. With the introduction of divorce Ireland has moved from a system which attached shame to the breakdown of marriage to one that provides for the reality of modern family life. Contemporary law now centres around the rights of children and promotes a child-focused approach to dispute resolution. Family Law in Context provides a comprehensive yet accessible foundational text supporting students and lecturers in meeting the learning outcomes of child and family law modules across universities and colleges in Ireland. Family Law in Context goes beyond an exposition of the law, engaging with debates on the nature of family law and law's impact on the forms of family life it seeks to regulate. In doing so it supports students in thinking critically about family law in Ireland.
