Description: A fascinating diary account of the Second World War, as seen through the eyes of a young girl. Flossie is just nine years old when, in 1939, Britain declares war on Germany and her father leaves the family home to join the army. Flossie is left to bring up her baby brother and to face a whole host of new experiences on her own. Her diary becomes an outlet for relaying all the news from at home and abroad. From the first evacuees arriving to her sweetheart's being killed in Normandy in 1944, Flossie has to endure much hardship. But her own special blend of courage, humour and fighting spirit sees her through to the Armistice, when she can welcome her dad home at last. Review: I never write reviews for products I buy, but I just wanted to share how good this book is. We bought this book for my 6 Yr old son as strangely enough he loves everything about the war, he is enjoying this book, he is belly laughing at some parts, however my 8yr old daughter has started reading it (I bought it knowing she would like it too) and together we love every page written in this fabulously detailed book. The writing and illustrations are so charming, funny and a little sad which adds to the overall feel for the book, we are only a few pages in so far, but it is perfectly pitched for children and I am enjoying reading to the kids and look forward to another night's read. There is so much information crammed into every page, so we only need to read a few pages at a time and they can be a really talking point as we can imagine the way they used to live back then and during the war. I highly recommend this book to any children who are slightly interested in the war or history, it gives a great insight. Great for my 8yr old to read she is a confident reader so able to read quite well despite the hand written text, but struggles with some historic words or dialect she has never come across before - which is again a great talking point for us all including my 6yr old son. Really really recommend it, we love it.

Review: Our middle son (7y) has been studying WWII as part of his school topic work, he also loves anything history related. We thought this book would be interesting, play on his curiosity and give him a sense of feeling what it was like to be a child during the War. Sadly, the book is written entirely in a handwriting style; I could barely read it (As a doctor I’m professionally used to horrific handwriting), so it is hard work at best. Next comes the ‘age’ thing; sadly for the real children of WWII they had to grow-up and become teenagers over the 4y period; however the book style is very childlike with drawings etc and has an appeal to a 7y old so we had no idea the ‘child’ who writes the letters in the book eventually becomes 14y! The subject matter includes falling in love and relationships like most teenagers. I can’t imagine you’d find many teens wanting to read this book because it looks like a little child’s book; so it doesn’t work.
