Review: This book is beautifully presented and a pleasure to read. More surprising to me is that somehow it has rekindled a long forgotten interest in cooking. The real test of any cookery book is how many recipes you actually try (and then repeat) and of course how good the results are. On this count `Nigella's Kitchen' passes with flying colours. I did find it hard to believe, but some of the recipes are genuinely so quick and effortless that they are handier and considerably more tasty than takeaway. Nigella's self deprecating yet helpful style seems to get me thinking "I could easily do that and what's more I might actually enjoy doing it". This is my first "Nigella book" and I found that it has a good balance between very quick simple recipes and more glamorous offerings if and when you want to be more adventurous. I have tried quite a few of the recipes and been impressed with the results. e.g. Chocolate Banana muffins were divine and so easy; Tarragon Chicken - very tasty with so little effort (and with a small number of ingredients); Salmon with Cous Cous - also a great quick meal. The book is more in tune with real life than many others - not everyone can or wants to spend hours in the kitchen, nor does everyone have access to handy delicatessens to source critical ingredients. So for those cooks who like to have more of a challenge, other books will probably suit much better. 'Kitchen' is written in Nigella's usual quirky style - I admit to having only ever watched any of Nigella's TV programmes for comedy value - inspired no doubt by Harry Hill who gave me my first introduction to Nigella on his TV Burp! Her esoteric chatty style makes for a much better read than the usual cookery book. Despite the lightness of tone the book delivers well on content e.g. there is a section on kitchen equipment with an interesting commentary on what is worth having (and better still what is not). Nigella also squeezes in helpful tips throughout e.g. using vermouth in recipes as an alternative to opening wine - an excellent idea...much more likely to find some in the bottle for the next recipe. On a practical note the book has a lovely red ribbon bookmark - so useful yet I am fairly sure none of my other cookery books have one. There is also a good index so it is easy to find recipes (I have not quite worked out exactly how the book is structured, but to be fair I haven't really tried). Also useful is that with each recipe Nigella will give a suggestion of what to serve the dish with. All in all, if you want a source for a batch of interesting and handy recipes to expand your culinary repertoire 'Nigella's Kitchen' is probably a good choice. At the very worst you will be equipped with a selection of interesting phrases to charm/surprise/shock your eating companions.

Review: The only redeeming feature about this book is the hints and tips at the front of the book. The recipes are at times just silly. Like ‘marmite pasta’ I mean, come on. There is nothing to like about any of it. Think she must have been having bad day when she wrote this book.
