Review: Elspeth Spindle was infected with illegal magic as a child, and would have been sent to her death if not for her caring aunt. But unknown to everyone, she shares her mind an animalistic entity she calls The Nightmare, a spirit that lends her its strength and speed, but may be exacting a terrible price in return. She eventually stumbles into a treasonous plot to stop the tyrannical established order. Not only that, she may even be falling in love with the only person who could ever truly understand her. There's much to like about One Dark Window, especially the magic system. Legal magic is centred around a set of magical cards, Providence Cards, a sort of super-powered Tarot that lend certain abilities. We learn about these bit by bit with chapter openers from The Ancient Book Of Alders, this world's holy book. There is a bit too much time spent on people's eyes, hair, how the hair falls, their gaze... This gets repetitive after a while. There are also very few good scenes: by that I mean, I mostly recall people standing around talking. It's not particularly dynamic, and I admit to skim-reading large chunks just to get to the next plot point. The characters are likeable enough, but the central romance (no spoilers, but obvious enough) didn't feel quite earned. I'd have like a bit more behind that, more of a journey before the recognition of their feelings. This is probably YA, which I love and enjoy often, but I'd have liked a sharper pace, and a few more colourful or dynamic scenes to punctuate the story arc.
