Review: I enjoyed this book immensely! I listened to it on audio and read the paper version. I really want to emphasize that a great narrator makes all the difference. Let me just say that Lauren Fortgang is one of the best narrators ever. She was able to put in her tone of voice all the warmth and charm this delightful story deserves. Her range is quite unique and her pronunciation so crisp and clear. I particularly love her ability for accents. Her Southern accent is inviting. Kudos to her. As for the author, Ruta Sepetys, she's a welcome surprise and I look forward to read more of her books in the hope they are as compelling and entertaining as this one. The reason I wanted to read OUT OF THE EASY is that I was attracted to the premise: a young girl (Josie) who’s trying to get away out of New Orleans, because she has nothing in common with her Mom (who’s a prostitute). Josie really wants a better life, go to college and make something of herself. She definitely has the brains to do it, having worked and lived in a bookstore since the age of twelve. You could say she was emancipated before her time. I loved the New Orleans setting. It felt and sounded exotic. Sometimes I had a hard time picturing the 1950ies, and rather imagined an earlier era. What I didn’t expect was the full blast of humor and warmth I got back from this book; there were so many colorful and lovely characters; Willie, the madam, Cokie (the driver), Sadie (the cook), Patrick (the best friend), Jesse, Dora, Sweety, and many others. All these nice people make up for Josie's mother being such an airhead and selfish person. Stealing the life long savings from her own daughter! Unbelievable. Josie is so fortunate to have such good friends though. I loved the characterization. Another plus point is the subtlety with with the author handled the relationship between the various characters. For instance, we have Josie who's friends with Patrick and Jesse, young eligible men, from such different backgrounds and with different life paths, who show interest in Josie, although it's not that clear, nor obvious. I admire the fact the author was able to be subtle about that, not divulging where Josie's heart would take her. And that Jesse character, WOW, what a great young man. I wish the book didn’t end so soon.

Review: This was ok - an easy read to pass time. Not particularly gripping, but interesting enough to keep me reading to the end. It all depends on your personal tastes and genre preferences.
