Review: First off I want to say that this book is packed full of great ideas for getting children into the outdoors and playing and exploring outside. It is 96-pages full of things to do, games to play and activities to take part in. From camping games; building a teepee; growing tomatoes; making a kite; growing herbs to rainy day games. There should be something in this book that will appeal to every child. The illustrations are bright and colourful and make you want to get outside just by looking at them. The text is straightforward and easy to follow, and I really like that at the front there are safety pages - things to look out for and things not to do when you're outside. However, I feel it is let down by the animal and plant identification pages. The more minor point is that there is no sense of scale between the different animals, insects and flowers. So on the insect page the honey bee and ant seem to be of comparable size, similarly on the bird page the blue tit is as big as a magpie. More seriously, for a book that has been created with the RHS and aimed at the UK market, the butterfly included in the spotting guide is the Monarch butterfly. This butterfly is mainly found in North America and is only a rare migrant to this country. The picture of a monarch butterfly is also used as the butterfly to look out for in Spring. Why choose this butterfly that is very unlikely to be seen, rather than a Peacock or Small Tortoiseshell. The picture of the insect next to the Harvestman tick box on the mini-beast spotting guide is not a Harvestman, it is a Garden spider - this arachnid looks completely different to a Harvestman, and Harvestmen are a different type of arachnid to spiders. I am quite shocked that a book with the RHS logo on it has incorrectly labelled a garden spider. Why wasn't this mistake picked up before publication? The text for the slugs - begins with "Snails are familiar animals..." Overall - A great book for outdoor activity ideas. However, for mini-beast identification especially, I would take along a field guide on your outdoor trips. (I have contacted Scholastic and the RHS to inform them of the errors)
