Description: The Lightning Thief: the first book in Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson series. Look, I didn't want to be a half-blood. I never asked to be the son of a Greek god. I was just a normal kid, going to school, playing basketball, skateboarding. The usual. Until I accidentally vaporized my maths teacher. That's when things started really going wrong. Now I spend my time fighting with swords, battling monsters with my friends and generally trying to stay alive. This is the one where Zeus, God of the Sky, thinks I've stolen his lightning bolt - and making Zeus angry is a very bad idea. Review: These were the books I read when there was no more Harry Potter - and these are so much better than Harry Potter, don't bother with the wizards: read these instead! The Lightning Thief is a fun, action-packed story following Percy Jackson as he is chased by monsters, attempting to find out why everyone thinks he stole Zeus’ lightning… Percy is a wonderful main character - he’s witty, fiercely brave, and smart. He is joined by two new friends: Grover and Annabeth. These characters are amazing! I’m trying not to let future books and series impact this review, but it’s a bit difficult! The Lightning Thief is funny, fast-paced, and has everything you want from this kind of book. There are monsters around every corner, a fantastic found family, and some of the coolest action and supernatural powers in children’s fiction.

Review: Overall I enjoyed this book and the take on the modernisation of the Greek gods (even if I didn’t agree with the author about some bits) it is fast paced and engaging. It doesn’t really cross over to adult books like sone children’s /YA but that said it was nice to read something less bleak and written is an easy to read style. I read this because people say it’s a great series and as good as Harry Potter. I think in terms of style there are parallels (although different subject matter) between the vibe of this book and the philosophers stone. I would probably recommend to 10-12 year old or younger if being read to the child. It is good if you have been introduced to Greek gods before this book.
