Review: God's Footballer' is a warm and affectionate celebration of the playing career of Peter Knowles. As Steve Gordos chronicles the prodigious talent from his schooldays up until his leaving the game, the reader is treated to a wonderful jaunt through a bygone football era. If you were a committed fan or a casual follower of the game - when it still had its beauty - you'll surely enjoy the read. The author's qualifications to write about his subject - and Black Country football in general - are unimpeachable and his writings for the Express & Star provide the solid bed-rock of the book. Indeed, much of Knowles' career was captured in writing (though little on film) and, as was once said, `The faintest ink is more reliable than the best memory'. Gordos (and other commentators that he generously credits) recount Knowles' fledgling career by using `potted' match reports to convey the very games in which the young Yorkshire lad played. Written chronologically, the reader is thus able to follow `El Beatle's' progress and setbacks as they happened. It's wonderful stuff. With Knowles as the `constant' in the equation, the variables come and go as the story moves forward. Older players and managers are discarded, newer ones take their places. Wolves fans will remember each and every one of them. If you are a Wolves fan and you were lucky enough to have seen `Knowlsey' play, this will bring the memories of that precocious talent flooding back. For those who missed him, give the book a try and get up-to-speed with what all the oldun's are talking about when they mention the name Peter Knowles. I was shocked and saddened to hear of Peter Knowles' reaction to the book. In the 10, November, 2009 edition of The Birmingham Mail, he had some rotten things to say about Steve Grodos and his book. The Mail reproduced parts of a letter that Knowles had written to Grodos. It's nasty, petulant stuff, I'm afraid and it does him no credit. This book is very sympathetic to Knowles and nowhere does the author take his subject to task for quitting the game or his reason for doing it. I would have; but that's another story. Good book. Enjoy. barry

Review: Although an interesting read, I would have enjoyed it more if there had been more focus on Peter’s life during the transition period (ie football to religion) and AFTER he gave up football.
