Review: Do not ever believe anyone who describes this book as 'impossible', 'impenetrable', 'obscurant', 'nonsensical', 'badly written' or other such dumb terms. It is true that this may be the most challenging read you ever tackle, even for a trained philosopher, however this does NOT mean that it makes no sense. This is simply the claim of people (Schopenhauer included) who have failed to understand it and refuse to accept their failure. On the other hand, know that this is not a quick read. If you think you can flick through this and get some quick nuggets of insight, you need to forget it. You cannot read this book on your holiday. If you want to understand it you are going to need to invest some serious time and patience to 'study' it as a serious project. Know that people have spent decades in this pursuit. But most importantly, do not believe that you are incapable of it. If you are looking at this then chances are that you already have the inquisitiveness and the interest to tackle it. If you also have the patience you are more than capable. Here is some guidance: 1 - Background. You do not need a philosophy degree. People with philsophy degrees have simply read a lot of philosophy (I know because I have a philosophy degree). You can do the same. In my opionion you should make the following the focus of your preparatory reading: Spinoza, Kant, post-Kant (by which I mean the philosophers which came between Kant and Hegel: Jacobi, Reinhold, Novalis, Fichte, Schelling etc - you can read summaries of this period rather than the source texts). It also helps to have a good grasp of Aristotle and, if you are new to philsophy, Descartes. This background reading can be a huge undertaking in itself, but remember I never said this was going to be quick or easy. 2 - Guide texts. Often guide texts can do more harm than good, as you really need to be making your own interpretation. However with this book it helps occasionally to get unstuck with someone else's view. The Routledge Guidebook by Robert Stern and the Reading' by Russon are in my opinion the best. 3 - Translation. None of the existent translations are perfect, and know that the German is also extremely difficult to read. Read more than 1 translation in tandem. Don't underestimate how helpful this can be. 4 - Study. Do not 'read' this book; make notes, summarise its sections in your own words; write down your own thoughts; think about its relevance today; unravel its meaning for yourself. You will find that this is itself an important implication of Hegel's philosophy. The rewards of all this are massive. Hegel, rather than being an obscurant, is probably one of the most innovative and original philosophers of modern times. When you truly 'get' this book you will be very glad you took the time and effort. It also makes it much easier to move onto the likes of Heidegger; also very difficult but not in comparison to Hegel.

Description: G. W. F. Hegel's first masterpiece, the Phenomenology of Spirit, is one of the great works of philosophy. It remains, however, one of the most challenging and mysterious books ever written. Michael Inwood presents this central work to the modern reader in an intelligible and accurate new translation. This translation attempts to convey, as accurately as possible, the subtle nuances of the original German text. Inwood also provides a detailed commentary that explains what Hegel is saying at each stage of his argument and also discusses the philosophical issues it raises. This volume will therefore prove invaluable to those who want to get to grips with Hegel's thought processes and to follow his complex argument. Description: Hegel's The Phenomenology of Spirit (1807) is one of the most influential texts in the history of modern philosophy. In it, Hegel proposed an arresting and novel picture of the relation of mind to world and of people to each other. Like Kant before him, Hegel offered up a systematic account of the nature of knowledge, the influence of society and history on claims to knowledge, and the social character of human agency itself. A bold new understanding of what, after Hegel, came to be called 'subjectivity' arose from this work, and it was instrumental in the formation of later philosophies, such as existentialism, Marxism, and American pragmatism, each of which reacted to Hegel's radical claims in different ways. This edition offers a new translation, an introduction, and glossaries to assist readers' understanding of this central text, and will be essential for scholars and students of Hegel. Description: Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit has a long-standing reputation as one of the key books in the history of Western philosophy, but many are unsure just what it is about. Even the words in the title are disputed: What sense of 'phenomenology" is being used? Is Geist to be rendered 'spirit" or 'mind"? What does this have to do with Hegel's original title, 'The Science of the Experience of Consciousness"? To add to the perplexity, Hegel developed his own technical vocabulary in writing the book, but the jargon he created never caught on and thus there is no common usage for it. As a consequence, both the beginner and the Hegel specialist must make key decisions about to understand many basic terms in the book. This Oxford Guide walks the reader through this canonical text paragraph-by-paragraph using accessible and approachable language, such that both students and instructors--whether they come from philosophy, political theory, literature, or history backgrounds--will benefit.

Description: Hegel's 1807 Phenomenology of Spirit is renowned for being one of the most challenging and important books in Western philosophy. Above all, it is famous for laying out a new approach to reasoning and philosophical argument, an approach that has been credited with influencing Karl Marx, Jean-Paul Sartre, and many other key modern philosophers. That approach is the so-called 'Hegelian dialectic" - an open-ended sequence of reasoning and argument in which contradictory concepts generate and are incorporated into a third, more sophisticated concept. While the Phenomenology does not always clearly use this dialectical method - and it is famously one of the most difficult works of philosophy ever written - the Hegelian dialectic provides a perfect template for critical thinking reasoning skills. A hallmark of good reasoning in the construction of an argument, and the searching out of answers must necessarily consider contradictory viewpoints or evidence. For Hegel, contradiction is key: it is precisely what allows reasoning to progress. Only by incorporating and overcoming contradictions, according to his method, is it possible for thought to progress at all. While writing like Hegel might not be advisable, thinking like him can help take your reasoning to the next level. Waterstones An Analysis of G.W.F. • Waterstones Hegel's Introduction to the System

    Price: £25.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: As an introduction to his own notoriously complex and challenging philosophy, Hegel recommended the sections on phenomenology and psychology from The Philosophy of Spirit, the third part of his Encyclopaedia of the Philosophic Sciences. These offered the best introduction to his philosophic system, whose main parts are Logic, Nature, and Sprit. Hegel's Introduction to the System finally makes it possible for the modern reader to approach the philosopher's work as he himself suggested. The book includes a fresh translation of 'Phenomenology" and 'Psychology," an extensive section-by-section commentary, and a sketch of the system to which this work is an introduction. The book provides a lucid and elegant analysis that will be of use to both new and seasoned readers of Hegel.

  • Waterstones A Spirit of Trust

    Price: £41.95

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: Forty years in the making, this long-awaited reinterpretation of Hegel's The Phenomenology of Spirit is a landmark contribution to philosophy by one of the world's best-known and most influential philosophers. In this much-anticipated work, Robert Brandom presents a completely new retelling of the romantic rationalist adventure of ideas that is Hegel's classic The Phenomenology of Spirit. Connecting analytic, continental, and historical traditions, Brandom shows how dominant modes of thought in contemporary philosophy are challenged by Hegel. A Spirit of Trust is about the massive historical shift in the life of humankind that constitutes the advent of modernity. In his Critiques, Kant talks about the distinction between what things are in themselves and how they appear to us; Hegel sees Kant's distinction as making explicit what separates the ancient and modern worlds. In the ancient world, normative statuses | ??judgments of what ought to be | ??were taken to state objective facts. In the modern world, these judgments are taken to be determined by attitudes | ??subjective stances. Hegel supports a view combining both of those approaches, which Brandom calls 'objective idealism": there is an objective reality, but we cannot make sense of it without first making sense of how we think about it. According to Hegel's approach, we become agents only when taken as such by other agents. This means that normative statuses such as commitment, responsibility, and authority are instituted by social practices of reciprocal recognition. Brandom argues that when our self-conscious recognitive attitudes take the radical form of magnanimity and trust that Hegel describes, we can overcome a troubled modernity and enter a new age of spirit.

    Price: £35.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: The Oxford Handbook of Hegel is a comprehensive guide to Hegel's philosophy, from his first published writings to his final lectures. There are six chapters each on the Phenomenology of Spirit and The Science of Logic, in depth analyses of the Encyclopedia and essays on the major parts of the Philosophy of Right. Several chapters cover the many newly edited lecture series from the 1820s, bringing new clarity to Hegel's conception of aesthetics, the philosophy of religion, and the history of philosophy. The concluding part focuses on Hegel's legacy, from his role in the formation of Marx's philosophy to his importance for contemporary liberal political philosophy. The Handbook includes many essays from younger scholars who have brought new perspectives and rigor to the study of Hegel's thought. The essays are marked by close engagement with Hegel's difficult texts and by a concern to highlight the ongoing systematic importance of Hegel's philosophy.
