Review: Beautiful book with beautiful illustrations, bought for one of my granddaughters, 12 years of age, who loves reading and writing poetry, plus anything to do with literature and creative writing, which is certainly to be encouraged through such books. The poems, I feel, are well suited for that age and older and it is lovely that any obscure or old-fashioned terminology is referenced and explained at end of each poem. She has only just received it so I will be very interested in her opinion, which I will gladly share with you.

Review: Not a true hardback book but heavy gloss cardboard with dustjacket. Illustrations add to each poem. Biography on author is included. Not thrilled with poem selection for 3-6th grade child. Most seem too difficult to read as "flow" that grade school children expect does not exist in most of Dickinson's poems which i did not consider when making this purchase. However, her style reveals to a young reader that you do not need line by line rhyme to have a poem.

Description: Emily Dickinson, one of the most important American poets of the nineteenth century, remains an intriguing and fascinating writer. The Cambridge Companion to Emily Dickinson includes eleven new essays by accomplished Dickinson scholars. They cover Dickinson's biography, publication history, poetic themes and strategies, and her historical and cultural contexts. As a woman poet, Dickinson's literary persona has become incredibly resonant in the popular imagination. She has been portrayed as singular, enigmatic, and even eccentric. At the same time, Dickinson is widely acknowledged as one of the founders of American poetry, an innovative pre-modernist poet as well as a rebellious and courageous woman. This volume introduces new and practised readers to a variety of critical responses to Dickinson's poetry and life, and provides several valuable tools for students, including a chronology and suggestions for further reading.

Description: Bring the mysterious and magical world of Emily Dickinson into your home by making the comforting foods that Emily loved to cook. Whether you are a fan of the hit television series Dickinson or have long been inspired by Emily Dickinson's poems, this enchanting cookbook brings Emily to life as little else could. A distinguished food historian said this about Emily: 'She was probably better known as a baker than a poet in her lifetime." Remarkably, that is true! Emily wrote her poetry in the kitchen of her home in Massachusetts and was cooking up a storm much of the time. She wrote poems on the wrappers of packages of chocolate that she had ordered for baking; and she wrote recipes in her notebooks of poems. Food and cooking were central to Emily's identity and were woven into her vocation of writing poetry. The more than 50 recipes in this colorful and lavishly illustrated book include recipes that Emily recorded during her life, other recipes we know she and her family enjoyed, and recipes typical of the New England of her time. All are completely updated for today's cooks. Throughout, you will also find inspiring poems by Emily, some about food specifically, others that provide poetic inspiration for the recipes in this volume. The recipes include: Winter Vegetable Soup Carrot Fritters Apple-Butter Glazed Doughnuts Boston Brown Bread Lemon Verbena Tea Loaf Emily's Oval Gingerbread Cakes Chocolate Loaf Cake with Cherries New England Pear Tart Peaches and Cream Pudding Emily's Chocolate Caramels This charming cookbook makes a perfect gift for the Emily fan in your life | ??or for yourself, if you happen to love Emily and the comforting foods of days gone by. Description: Emily Dickinson, poet of the interior life, imagined words/swords, hurling barbed syllables/piercing. Nothing about her adult appearance or habitation revealed such a militant soul. Only poems, written quietly in a room of her own, often hand-stitched in small volumes, then hidden in a drawer, revealed her true self. She did not live in time but in universals | ??an acute, sensitive nature reaching out boldly from self-referral to a wider, imagined world. Dickinson died without fame; only a few poems were published in her lifetime. Her legacy was later rescued from her desk | ??an astonishing body of work, much of which has since appeared in piecemeal editions, sometimes with words altered by editors or publishers according to the fashion of the day. Now Ralph Franklin, the foremost scholar of Dickinson's manuscripts, has prepared an authoritative one-volume edition of all extant poems by Emily Dickinson | ??1,789 poems in all, the largest number ever assembled. This reading edition derives from his three-volume work, The Poems of Emily Dickinson: Variorum Edition (1998), which contains approximately 2,500 sources for the poems. In this one-volume edition, Franklin offers a single reading of each poem | ??usually the latest version of the entire poem | ??rendered with Dickinson's spelling, punctuation, and capitalization intact. The Poems of Emily Dickinson: Reading Edition is a milestone in American literary scholarship and an indispensable addition to the personal library of poetry lovers everywhere.

Description: Dickinson after her death: a novel of the trio of women who brought Emily Dickinson's poems out of the shadows When she died, Emily Dickinson left behind hundreds of texts scribbled on scraps of paper. She also left behind three formidable women: her steadfast sister, Lavinia; her brother's ambitious mistress, Mabel Loomis Todd; and his grief-stricken wife, Susan Gilbert Dickinson. With no clear instructions from Emily, these three women would, through mourning and strife, make from those scraps of paper a book that would change American literature. From the author of Paper Houses, this is the improbable, almost miraculous, story of the birth of a book years after the death of its author. In these sensitive and luminous pages, Dominique Fortier explores, through Dickinson's poetry, the mysterious power that books have over our lives, and the fragile and necessary character of literature. Description: Widely considered the definitive edition of Emily Dickinson's poems, this landmark collection presents her poems here for the first time 'as she preserved them," and in the order in which she wished them to appear. It is the only edition of Dickinson's complete poems to distinguish clearly those she took pains to copy carefully onto folded sheets in fair hand | ??presumably to preserve them for posterity | ??from the ones she kept in rougher form. It is also unique among complete editions in presenting the alternate words and phrases Dickinson chose to use on the copies of the poems she kept, so that we can peer over her shoulder and see her composing and reworking her own poems. The world's foremost scholar of Emily Dickinson, Cristanne Miller, guides us through these stunning poems with her deft and unobtrusive notes, helping us understand the poet's quotations and allusions, and explaining how she composed, copied, and circulated her poems. Miller's brilliant reordering of the poems transforms our experience of them. A true delight, this award-winning collection brings us closer than we have ever been to the writing practice of one of America's greatest poets. With its clear, uncluttered page and beautiful production values, it is a gift for students of Emily Dickinson and for anyone who loves her poems.
