Review: “Port of Earth 2” collects issues #5-8 of this near-future science-fiction story. The basic premise of this is that an alien ‘rest & refuelling stop’ has been set up off the coast of the USA (of all places), and in exchange for water, the Earth has been given the technology to draw energy from water. Our front-of-page heroes are a pair of security operatives (armed & uniformed) who work for the agency tasked with policing all this. They are also currently being followed by camera drones that are filming them for a documentary (which ‘airs’ in the next volume, by the way). Our dynamic duo are in hot pursuit of an illegal alien who has fled the port and is loose in the local area. This episode continues the pursuit into the port itself – off-limits to humans, but the escape has now been promoted to a terrorist following a ‘major incident’, and our boys are not taking ‘no’ for an answer. Our terrorist reveals a number of clues as to what is actually going on, before the conclusion of this episode, which begin to bear fruit in the next volume, which I felt the need to read immediately after this one… The biography at the back reveals that the writer was a teacher of screenwriting, and now writes for TV and cinema. This certainly shows in the pacing and scene-setting of this story, and, while being an excellent comic-book, is obviously a pitch for a TV show as well. The artwork is excellent, with the colouring using muted tones, not quite black and white, as there are colour tones used, but it is all very ‘grey’ in many senses of the word, and matches the feel of the story.
