Review: One must have those three points in alliteration, right? So, ok, I've abused "Prehistoric". Read "dated" or even "out of date", just so long as you don't expect a modern book. Lloyd-Jones writes in his time, which is the first half of the 20th century. He writes expressively and with conviction, and what he expresses is very much his personal view of what preaching is. And he is passionate and inspiring. The book is hugely conservative, see spoiler below. Since I am also conservative, that does not trouble me too much, but the prospective reader needs to be aware of that. However, what makes the book for me is Lloyd-Jones' adamant and convincing belief in preaching as a vital ministry, in preaching as a living process which begins in the inspiration of the Holy Spirit as He opens the Word to the preacher and which ends in the planting of that Word in living hearts, and in the necessary humility of the preacher under God. He also insists upon the necessity of evangelism as a sustained part of the ministry of preaching. This is one of my favourite books on preaching. Spoiler: To illustrate his conservative attitude, Lloyd-Jones disapproves the recording and retransmission of sermons in any form and regards printed sermons, or collections of some, as being of some limited value but excludes these from the realm of preaching as such. He regards the practice of student ministers or preachers reviewing video of themselves preaching as "an abomination", which only serves to make them more self-conscious.
