Review: George Bokhua is a well known graphic designer and I've taken a number of his courses on Skillshare to refine my logo design skills, so I had high expectations of this book. Bokhua applies his modern minimalist approach to logo design to the structure of Principles: it is clear, clean, and there's nothing superfluous that would distract from the core understanding of that which he is explaining. The type is big, the copy to the point and brief, and the illustrations likewise are large and given room to breathe on the page, inviting the reader to actually take time to contemplate the words and marks on the page. The book is nicely divided into general concepts, taxonomy, effects and visual rules, the design process, and presentation. It ostensibly feels geared towards novices - and I do recommend beginners pick this up before you go out and buy Logo Modernism or Los Logos etc - but I've been using it as a good grounding tool when I need a shot of direction or inspiration. In terms of production, it's very good and I like the paper thickness and choice of paper color - an off white, almost cream. From a user experience perspective, it's a really nice thing to hold in your hand. Definitely recommend for all kinds of designers.

Review: I purchased this book because the author’s logo work is top notch. What I wasn’t expecting is the egregious design error of not leaving enough space for the book’s inner gutter—content just disappears into it and it is highly annoying. As for the content, it’s probably best for the early learner and not so much for an experienced designer. Still, the work is nice and the book will happily occupy a space on my shelf.
