Review: For anyone of an artistic bent, Lehrer's book is both a relief and an inspiration. The shock of the new is a product of how our brains work. And how that shock becomes the familiar (we can listen to the Rite of Spring today without needing to cover our ears)is also a product of how the brain works. Each chapter focuses on a different artist and demonstrates their contribution to civilisation which neuroscience is only just beginning to understand. Lehrer is an erudite guide and writes well for the interested lay person. Highly recommended.

Review: An interesting account of recent developments in neuroscience interspersed with essays on late 19th/early 20th century literary and artistic figures whose works seem to foreshadow them. Some of the alleged connections are however rather tenuous and/or not as remarkable as the author seems to think, and some statements make me worry how much the factual accuracy of the book can by relied on (e.g. describing Proust's Combray as a suburb of Paris when the town on which it is based is 75 miles away).

Description: Is science the only path to knowledge? In this sparkling and provocative book, Jonah Lehrer explains that when it comes to understanding the brain, art got there first. Taking a group of celebrated writers, painters and composers, Lehrer shows us how artists have discovered truths about the human mind - real, tangible truths - that science is only now rediscovering. We learn, for example, how Proust first revealed the fallibility of memory; how George Eliot understood the brain's malleability; how the French chef Escoffier intuited umami (the fifth taste); how Cézanne worked out the subtleties of vision; and how Virginia Woolf pierced the mysteries of consciousness. It's a riveting tale of art trumping science again and again. Waterstones Proust Was a Neuroscientist - shop the best deal online on thebookbug.co.uk

  • Waterstones Marcel Proust

    Price: £18.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: A witty, refreshing, and fun book on the experience of reading Marcel Proust. What would the world be like without this work, where would we be if it hadn't happened? This is how Michael Wood found himself writing about Proust's work as an event and about events in relation to that work itself. The event that created the figure we know as Proust did not take a whole lifetime, we can date it to within certain months, perhaps certain weeks, of a certain year, 1908. That was when Proust the interesting occasional writer and full-time socialite, turned into an ostensible hermit and a real novelist. This short book says something about the event as a lifetime affair, and shows what the sudden change of 1908 looks like. It explores the work of Marcel Proust as an event in the world, something that happened to literature and culture and our understanding of history. This event has more aspects than we can count, but this book offers detailed critical snapshots of seven of them: the birth of Proust as a novelist; what he teaches us about the mythology of beginnings; about metaphor as a kind of rebellion; about love as a permanent anxiety attack; about the Dreyfus Affair; about the concept of justice; about the mythology of endings.

  • Waterstones The Cambridge Companion to Proust

    Price: £25.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: The Cambridge Companion to Proust, first published in 2001, aims to provide a broad account of the major features of Marcel Proust's great work A la recherche du temps perdu (1913-27). The specially commissioned essays, by acknowledged experts on Proust, address a wide range of issues relating to his work. Progressing from background and biographical material, the chapters investigate such essential areas as the composition of the novel, its social dimension, the language in which it is couched, its intellectual parameters, its humour, its analytical profundity and its wide appeal and influence. Particular emphasis is placed on illustrating the discussion of issues by frequent recourse to textual quotation (in both French and English) and close analysis. This is the only contributory volume of its kind on Proust currently available. Together with its supportive material, a detailed chronology and bibliography, it will be of interest to scholars and students alike.
