Review: This book is simply brilliant. It describes the realities of a terrible war in awful conditions against an enemy who refused to accept defeat, whatever the circumstances. My father served as an infantry soldier in Burma and said that it was the best and most realistic book he had read about the war - and he wrote a few himself...)

Review: An excellent and readable account of a young man fighting in Burma in WW2. It captures both the terror as well as the boredom and monotony, which seem to make up the infantryman's lot. A word of warning: not for the politically correct - GMF unapologetically gives his views (based on personal experiences) on the Japanese, dropping the atom bomb and the mental health of soldiers who have been in combat - and they don't necessarily chime with today's views...
