Review: 3.5 stars. Rosen has given us classics, he's made us cry, he's created joyful stories and narrative poems that will entertain generations. Everyone should have his books in their child's collections. I loved the idea of following children through their day with poetry. And they do sound just like young children do. From getting up and brushing teeth, to playing with balloons and paddling pools, eating and getting into bed again, it's a full day of fun and poetry. I'm just not a fan of so much 'noise' in repetition, repeated words when read aloud for me just feel hard to express. A few of these felt that way: Digger. Here They Come. Some of these poems are marvellous - Ready for Spaghetti plays with words, The Itch personifies a scratchy itch. Mirror felt Shirley Hughes-like in its delving inside a toddler's brain at how they see the world around them. Dunbar does a lovely job illustrating Rosen's little people. It's a collection of poems that children may like more than their adults, I can see moments of lovely connection in there and some that for me just leave me wondering if I'm just an old grouch. Lovely hardback, and children need poetry in their lives. For ages 2-5. With thanks to Walker Books for providing a sample reading copy.
