Review: I really thought this book was my bible when my baby was a newborn. I followed it to the letter, including things I now look back on horrified - like not looking at your newborn in the eye at night, leaving your newborn to cry for 6 minutes when you put them down to nap/sleep, and only feeding every 4 hours. Perhaps not so surprisingly, my baby did not sleep through the night as a result of this book, and I was left feeling confused and wondering where I went wrong. Turns out, there is no one size fits all approach for babies! Your baby is a real human being with needs and wants, not a robot that needs to be taught how to sleep and only eat/drink every 4 hours (do any of us go 4 hours without a sip of water?!). Some of the language like 'winning a battle' with your babies sleep, is damaging and dehumanizes small babies. I would guess that most people reading this book wouldn't leave a 3 year old to scream cry for 18 minutes - so why would we do that to a 6 month old baby? And the routines are ridiculously over complicated and unless you have a drill sergeant in your home I struggle to see how anyone would follow this. [An example for a 6 week old baby: 6:40am express from your right side, 7am: feed baby for 25 minutes on your left side, then 25 minutes from your right side. 8:30am - baby naps, 11am: wake baby (but what if baby woke already?! no advice for this), feed for 25 minutes on right side, then 25 minutes on left side, 12:30pm nap, 2:45pm wake baby, feed 25 minutes left side, then 25 minutes right side, 4:15pm - go for a walk so baby can go to sleep in their pram, 5:15pm wake baby, 5:40pm bath, 6pm - feed baby 25 minutes right side, 25 minutes left side. Or, feed expressed milk from a bottle at this time, in which case express 90ml from each side at 7:30pm, 7pm - baby sleep, 9:40pm express 90ml from left side only, 10pm - dreamfeed from right side.] I mean honestly who has the ENERGY to worry about that kind of routine!!! Please please know that you do NOT need to follow a routine this strictly in order for your baby to sleep through the night. Establishing a consistent rhythm to your day is a great way to feel more in control and get baby onto a more regular nap schedule, but just like us, babies will not always feel like following the rules! And many babies wake overnight, regularly, for at least the first year of life. This is totally normal, and a book telling you that most babies will sleep through on this routine by 12 weeks is damaging and demotivating to new parents. I really hope that at least one new parent learns from my mistakes and does not trust this book or any other book that says you must follow their advice strictly to guarantee success. Trust your instinct, follow babies cues, and figure out a balance of things that work for you and them.
