Review: In 2000 my mother was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I had been reading Patrick Holford's general health book the Optimum Nutrition Bible (now called theThe Optimum Nutrition Bible: The Book You Have To Read If Your Care About Your Health: The Book You Have to Read If You Care About Your Health - more recent edition) We started her on a low glycaemic diet and supplements similar to what is suggested in this book but with the science we had in 2000. The NHS seems to expect that those diagnosed with type 2 diabetes will be diet-controlled for about 6 months and then need to go on medication and later on insulin. It's now 2013. 13 years since my Mum was diagnosed. She's diet-controlled and on a low glycaemic diet, which is, not the standard NHS advice. For much of those 13 years she's had the sort of results with the standard blood tests that would have NEVER got her diagnosed if she had had them in 2000. One time I saw a nurse at the surgery she spotted my surname and immediately started chatting about how impressed she was by my mother and how she had got it all under control. That day I wasn't in mood for pointing out just how low my opinion of standard medical advice is. A receptionist at the surgery asked my mother to talk to her diabetic husband about keeping well. (She did but he was convinced his fate was sealed). My mum has helped a number of diabetics get their blood sugar under control. They were heading for medication or insulin BECAUSE they were following standard medical advice in many cases. Let's be very clear... the NHS record on diabetes is a record of failure. They expect failure. They get failure. And they are inclined to dismiss another approaches because they think that failure is only thing possible. However, although blood sugar level isn't the only factor to consider it does mean you can test for yourself what works better - standard medical advice or Patrick's method. I became a Nutrition Consultant and one of my clients later consulted a diabetic nurse. She was concerned that my advice was different from a dieticians. The nurse asked the key question "Which leads to lower (healthier) blood sugar levels?" My advice did. The nurse told my former client to follow my advice then. Makes sense. It worked better. So why not test it for yourself.... what works better the standard medical advice or Patrick's approach? Try each for a few weeks and see. (Due to restrictions on what you can say as a Nutrition Consultant, I'd like to make it clear that I'm no longer in practice.)

Review: If you have little understanding of how and why diabetes happens this book will prove useful to you. I am not diabetic and would prefer to stay that way, and again a helpful book if you are in the same mental space as me. The conventional wisdom of calorie controlled eating is seriously flawed as is the model of controlling/ avoiding diabetes via this method. Keeping your carbs low is the natural human way of controlling excess blood sugar production from damaging your body. Again Holfords book indicates this but then gets into glycemic loading which may work for you but has too many carbs for my liking. If you go for this book -I also suggest reading Zoe Harcombe's," Why do you over eat" and/ or "Stop counting calories" and Blood sugar 101 by Jenny Ruhl for a more balanced perspective. Alex M
