Description: In the 1980s and early 1990s, Scotland was an excellent destination for the railway enthusiast. The many locomotive hauled trains running through splendid scenery, together with the surviving railway infrastructure and mechanical signalling, provided many fine photographic opportunities. My first railway visit to Scotland was on board The Fair Maid rail tour to Perth, behind Flying Scotsman in 1983. The following year, I again travelled to Scotland, this time on the F & W Railtours The Skirl O' The Pipes 4, to Kyle of Lochalsh and Mallaig, my first visit to the Scottish Highlands. I had previously been travelling abroad for railways, but impressed by what I saw, I decided that I would quickly return to photograph the Scottish railway scene, before it changed too much. This was the start of a series of visits, each for one or two weeks, between 1984 and June 1991, covering the whole country. This book is a photographic record of the locomotives, trains and infrastructure of the railways of Scotland and the landscapes through which the trains ran, as recorded by my various cameras during the period of my visits. Description: The Book of Scotlands outlines 156 possible Scotlands which currently do not exist anywhere but maybe, someday, could. At a moment when, after centuries of desire and unrest, independence seems to be a real possibility for Scotland, Scottish-born, Berlin-based musician/author/journalist Momus, real name Nick Currie, offers a delirium of visions, practical and absurd. Momus, who describes himself as a polymath-dabbler, suggests that the real Scotland is free to embrace or reject this parallel world.

Description: The 1980s and 1990s were exciting times for British Rail. For many years British Rail had been structured into regions and the livery for rolling stock consisted of blue and grey or just plain blue. Now, however, the railways of Britain were entering a new chapter of sectorisation, restructuring and ultimately privatisation. We were introduced to exciting new bold liveries like Network South East's red, white, grey and blue, and Inter City's two-tone grey, red and white livery complete with stylish Silver Swallow logo. The freight companies also introduced new liveries; mostly a two-tone grey with logo to denote which sub-sector owned it and RES (Rail Express Systems) later introduced a striking red livery with blue and grey flashes. New locomotives, coaches, diesel and electric multiple units all entered service across the country, finished in the new liveries of the recently formed sectors. Other rolling stock moved on across the network and over time received new liveries for their new work. In this book, the first of two, Kenny Barclay shares some of his collection of photographs of diesel locomotives and diesel multiple units taken at various locations across the country during the 1980s and 1990s. Being an employee of British Rail at this time, Kenny Barclay had regular access to a number of depots and railway works across the network where many of his photographs were taken. This book collects some of his finest photographs documenting the fascinating changes across the network at this time. • Waterstones Modern Traction in the North of England

    Price: £15.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: In this book John Whiteley provides a photographic survey of modern traction in the North of England in the last years of British Rail and the first years of privatisation. The photographs cover the period from the early 1960s to the 1990s. At the start of this period BR was divided into regions, with the North of England covered by the London Midland Region and North Eastern Region, and Rail Blue became the predominant livery during the 1960s. Sectorisation in the 1980s brought visible changes to the railways, including new liveries and motive power, and this process was accelerated in the decade of privatisation in the 1990s. The area covered ranges from northern Derbyshire and northern Cheshire, including Chester, to Yorkshire, Lancashire, Cumbria and up to the Scottish border, as well as in and around Manchester and Liverpool. This photographic survey of two decades of modern traction in a period of great change in the railways of the North of England will appeal to all those with an interest in the history of the railways of this region. • Waterstones Class 47 Locomotives

    Price: £15.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: Brush Type 4 Class 47 locomotives have seen more than sixty years of service on Britain's railways, celebrating their diamond jubilee on 25 September 2022. This book draws together previously unseen photographs by the author and others who have spent decades photographing, traveling behind and preserving these locomotives. Looking at the early years of the fleet of 512 locomotives as they settled into hauling passenger and freight, as well as the halcyon years of the 1980s and 1990s and more recent times, Martin Measures shares the importance of these locomotives to the railways and their many enthusiasts. Lavishly illustrated throughout, this fitting tribute to the Brush Type 4s commemorates their long and successful service. • Waterstones Lorries in Britain: The 1990s

    Price: £15.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: The 1990s were a time of change as British manufacturers struggled to keep pace with the times and the invasion of imported vehicles. However, what a lot of enthusiasts consider to be classics of their time were still to be seen dutifully earning their keep. A lot of UK companies had by this time already tested the water with seed vehicles, which were put head to head with established makes for comparison. With a wealth of previously unpublished images, this is a fantastic record of the nation's lorry scene during the 1990s.
