Review: Two thousand years of society, language, exploration and science have happened since the life of Jesus. This has changed our thinking and understanding of the world and human relationships. N T Wright has unravelled the relationship between Jesus's words and actions that have.been hidden from us by the passage time and changes in social structure. Highly recommended for all seeking to understand the real message as experienced by the Disciples and peoples of the time.

Review: This book reads like a very long and tedious sermon. Wright claims that Jesus is the current king or 'CEO' of the world and that humans, principally Christians, are his agents on earth. This kingship is made manifest through people like Wilberforce who helped to end slavery, Cicely Saunders who helped found the hospice movement, and Desmond Tutu who was the inspiration for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in post-apartheid South Africa, as well as more contemporary phenomena like street pastors. In other words, Christianity resolves itself into emancipatory and welfarist humanism. Wright simply makes up yet another account of the meaning of the death of Jesus - he claims that it 'exhausted' the power of Satan. Wright is so wrapped up in his mythopoeic worldview that he makes no connection between this claim and the magnitude of evil still rampant in the world such as the 20th century holocaust. This book is simply incomprehensible to those who are not immersed in Wright's biblical world. But at least it means that Christians and humanists can get on with making the world a better place, whether or not Jesus reappears to sort everything out once and for all (what, even earthquakes, climate change, and resource depletion?!). Another bishop and scholar, John AT Robinson, was writing much more engaging books two generations ago.

Description: Drawing on a collection of lectures that Tom Wright delivered from 1999 to 2015, God in Public brings together the message of Jesus - in its larger biblical context - and the challenges of the contemporary public and political worlds. Those new to Tom Wright will find this book an ideal introduction into his writings. In this book, Wright challenges the west's response to 9/11 and then expands to discuss a more Jesus inspired way of approaching the public problems we find ourselves in, based on the following Jesus' life and teachings. Questions such as: What has Christianity to do with power? Why must the church remind those in authority of their responsibilities? And What can Christians do to act as the voice of the voiceless? Are central in this book as Wright demonstrates the many ways in which faithful exegesis of scripture can throw fresh light - God's light - on the great philosophical and ethical problems of our day.

Description: In The Day the Revolution Began Tom Wright invites you to consider the full meaning of the event at the heart of the Christian faith - Jesus' crucifixion. As he did in his acclaimed Surprised by Hope, Wright once again challenges commonly held beliefs, this time arguing that the Protestant Reformation did not go far enough in reshaping our understanding of the Cross. With his characteristic rigour and incisiveness, he goes back to the New Testament to show that Jesus' death not only releases us from the guilt and power of sin, but is nothing less than the beginning of a world-wide revolution that continues to this day - a revolution that creates and energizes a movement responsible for restoring and reconciling the whole of God's creation. The Day the Revolution Began will take you to a new level in your appreciation of the meaning of Jesus' sacrifice: opening up its powerful and amazing implications, inspiring you with a renewed sense of purpose and hope, and reminding you of the crucial role you can play in the world-transforming movement that Jesus started.
