Description: Six Drawing Lessons : Hardback : Harvard University Press : 9780674365803 : 0674365801 : 19 Dec 2014 : Art, William Kentridge says, is its own form of knowledge. It does not simply supplement the real world, and cannot be purely understood in the rational terms of academic disciplines. The studio is where linear thinking is abandoned and the material processes of the eye, the hand, the charcoal and paper become themselves the guides of creativity. Review: I am a great fan of William Kentridge's Art, and having heard him talking on a programme about Lines on BBC R4, when this book was mentioned, I ordered it and couldn't put it down after it arrived. It is a written version of six lectures he gave, and whilst it cannot hope to give the same result as being present for these, it is worth buying the book. His way of explaining the process of making art, what it can really mean, and what goes on in his studio to complete his work is clear but wide-reaching, drawing on politics, geography, history, geology, art history, music, culture. It gives a particularly humane and intelligent view of colonialism and its impact on indigenous peoples, in particular his assessment of Southern Africa's past and present day. It is a book anyone who is interested in gaining insight into the way a talented and intelligent contemporary artist like Kentridge produces work will love this book.

Review: Not the easiest book in the world to follow - although he was wonderfully clear on Radio 4 which is why I ordered the book. It helps if you have the film clips he refers to, I suspect.
