Description: The merchants of Manchester were concerned about the high tariffs charged at Liverpool Docks and the excessive rates for transhipment of goods to Manchester. They decided that the best thing for their trade was to bring seagoing ships up to Manchester. And this they did - via numerous enabling Bills and by grand-scale Victorian engineering. The Port of Manchester and its ship canal opened for business on 1 January 1894 with existing clients such as James Knott's Prince Line running to the Mediterranean, and Fisher Renwick to London. But it could not readily entice the Liverpool shipowners to use Manchester, and it faced a long struggle to break the indifference of Conference Lines to the new port. The First World War finally allayed any lingering worries over the inadequacies of Manchester and the Liverpool companies then arrived in abundance. Manchester had its own shipping companies, including Manchester Liners, H. Watson & Company, Sivewright Bacon, Manchester Steamship Company, Manchester Spanish Line and others. Business peaked at Manchester in the 1950s but rapidly declined through the 1970s as ships became too big to transit the canal. Between 1894 and 1982 ships of all kinds docked at Manchester from all over the world; this is the story of the ships that came to Manchester. • Waterstones The Early Railways of Manchester

    Price: £15.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: Manchester was Britain's first railway city. The success of the Liverpool & Manchester Railway in 1830 inspired many entrepreneurs and businessmen to build their own lines, not only to share in the success of the Liverpool & Manchester, but to tap into the wealth of Britain's first industrial city. The burgeoning realisation of Manchester as a railway hub quickly saw the city joined by iron road to Leeds, Sheffield, Birmingham, and London, and created the opportunity for the first Manchester-built railway locomotive - appropriately named Manchester - to be constructed in 1831. By 1845 the railways of Manchester had matured into a form that is recognisable today and that remained static for the next twenty-five-or-so years, until the opening of Central and Exchange. Anthony Dawson takes us through the history of the railways around Manchester, including their difficulties and innovations, as well as their growth over time and their legacy for the city's rail network today. Description: The definitive account of the pop cult capital of the UK by Dave Haslam, one of Manchester's top D Js and journalists. Manchester, a predominantly working-class city, away from the nation's capital, has been at the margins of English culture for centuries. The explosion of music and creativity in Manchester can be traced back from Victorian music hall and the jazz age, to Northern Soul and rock and roll, through to acid house and Oasis. But its roots are in Manchester's history as a melting pot of popular idealism and dissent, from the industrial revolution on, via film, theatre, comedy and TV. And for Manchester, read England and the world. Dave Haslam is uniquely placed to tell this story - Manchester, England is as witty, erudite and passionate as you would expect from a man who can say, again and again, I was there. Like Jon Savage's England's Dreaming, this is the last word on the abiding centre of 40 years of UK pop culture.

Description: This is the engaging story of how Manchester built the world's first municipal water supply in the Longendale Valley in the 1840s - 70s. Original images from the archives of North West Water, document the largest chain of reservoirs ever built at that time. The account demonstrates how the city helped beat cholera, typhoid and other water-borne diseases, factories and cotton mills in the valleys around Manchester. Tom Quayle's first-hand experiences are backed by information extracted from the Victorian water-engineer - J. F. Bateman's - handwritten reports to the Manchester Corporation Waterworks Committee. • Waterstones Blitz Britain Manchester & Salford

    Price: £12.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: In 1940, the Manchester and Salford Blitz saw the city and its surroundings targeted by the German Luftwaffe. The most destructive attack was launched in late December 1940; it is remembered today as 'the Christmas Blitz'. Nearly 800 people lost their lives, and thousands more were injured, in two nights of raids ending with a devastating Christmas Eve that saw hundreds of tons of high explosive and thousands of incendiaries fall. Attacks continued into 1941 and beyond, and landmarks such as the cathedral, the Free Trade Hall, the Royal Infirmary and the Royal Exchange were all to suffer. At Old Trafford, too, a bomb wrecked the pitch and demolished the stands. This 75th anniversary narrative, based on first-hand accounts and extensive research, tells the story of how the people of Manchester, Salford, Trafford Park and Stretford endured this dark period in their history - a tale of courage, sacrifice, loss and the unconquerable power of the human spirit. Richly illustrated with contemporary photographs and documents, some of which have never been published before, this book is a valuable addition to the history of Manchester and Salford. • Waterstones The Story of Manchester

    Price: £16.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: This richly illustrated history explores every aspect of life in Manchester. Manchester is noted for the 'Industrial Revolution' - its factories, working-class people and urban development all based around its production of cotton textiles. But this is not the complete story. Manchester has always been a more vibrant place which dates back to Roman times. This book traces the development of this important city and its people from the earliest times to the present, where each period in its progress links to the next. The history of Manchester is very much based around its people, who were often pioneers, whether this be the first railway line, the first public library, fighting for greater political rights, or key wealth creators for the nation. As we advance through the twenty-first century, Manchester's role in the United Kingdom remains undiminished as it becomes ever more cosmopolitan and a northern powerhouse of economic, social and political progress. Description: With a proud history of industry and creativity, Manchester is one of the world's greatest cities. In 2015 it was designated 'The Northern Powerhouse' but, of course, being the home of the Industrial Revolution, it always was. Manchester gave the world technological innovation as well as manufacturing strength. By the second half of the nineteenth century Manchester was home to more than 100 mills and well over 1,000 warehouses. It was in Manchester that Whitworth devised a standard for screw threads in 1841. Here John Dalton developed modern atomic theory, Rutherford split the atom and Alan Turing and colleagues developed the world's first computer. It also has a great cultural heritage, from the Halle Orchestra, founded in 1858, to the first regional repertory theatre set up by Annie Horniman in 1908. 'Madchester' was at the centre of the UK music scene in the '80s. 2015 saw the opening of HOME - a major new £25 million arts centre. The skyline of Manchester is again being transformed. The Victorian men of Manchester would be surprised to see the vast modern buildings that now sit side by side with the old. Here we tell Manchester's story from Roman Britain through to the twenty-first century. Waterstones Central Manchester Through Time - shop the best deal online on thebookbug.co.uk
