The impish Pinocchio does not want to be a puppet; he yearns to become a real boy. Review: This is a lavishly illustrated version of the classic 1883 tale, following Pinocchio, a wooden puppet who refuses to go to school or work for a living and ends up in a series of terrible adventures until he can learn how to become a real boy. My main take away from this book (and the various movie adaptations) is that Pinocchio is an absolute nightmare. Talk about out of the frying pan and into the fire, every chapter has Pinocchio hopping straight from a bad situation into one even worse and ignoring all opportunities to simply go home (of which there were plenty). It is a very frustrating story with a frankly unlikable protagonist, but it is a classic and has a very clear moral that you can’t argue with. The illustrations by MinaLima are stunning and add a lot to the story. There are less interactive elements than in some of their other books though, and this one involved pages that could be cut out from the book to make finger puppets and clothing for a Pinocchio puppet, which I personally refuse to do.
