Review: I found this book repetitive and tedious to read to my children. I got really bored with the long pieces of dialogue and constant written noises that are repetitions of the same sounds throughout the book. I just cut them out after a while, I didn’t find they added anything to the lyrical sound or the story. Also, I had to stop reading before the end because my son found the story line too upsetting. *Big Spoiler Alert* I didn’t understand the need for the boys mother to have to sacrifice herself at the end. The way David Williams deals with this plot is very surface and dismissive, despite seeming to build a strong sense of the relationship and care between mother and son. Many other characters are lost along the way but do not have any emotional significance. The idea that she would have chosen to leave her son seems at odds with the relationship he has drawn. It made my son cry and I fail to see what it added to the story. I know a lot of people compare Williams to Roald Dahl, and I personally think the stories and style of his books tries a bit too hard to emulate Dahl, but for me in readability they miss the mark. Anyhow, back to the plot - and if you do want to compare - I feel this is kind of like bumping of Miss Honey at the end of Matilda and then having Matilda reflect that at least she is in a better place because of her. Just didn’t work for us…
